Chapter 4 Converting Machines
Select a Standalone Virtual Machine or Backup Image Source
Usethisprocedureifyoursourcesystemisalocalorremotestandalonevirtualmachineorvirtualappliance.
Forexample,youcanselectavirtualmachinefromVMwareWorkstation(.vmxor.vmtn),VMware Fusion,
VMwareServer,VMwareGSX Server,aMicrosoftVirtual PC,MicrosoftVirtual Server(.vmc),ora
Symantec Backup ExecSystem Recovery(.sv2i),
LiveStateRecovery,Norton Ghost(.sv2ionly),or
StorageCraftShadowProtect(.spf)image.
To select a source standalone virtual machine and choose the disks to convert

3Browseforthesourcevirtualmachineorimage.
4IntheFilenamefield,selecttheconfiguration
fileforthemachineyouwanttoconvertandopenthefile.
YoucanusetheFilesoftypefieldtofilterthedisplayedfilesbyfileextension.
IfthesourcevirtualmachineisWindows NTSMP,Convertermightrequirefilesfromservicepacksorhot
fixes.Inthiscase,theNewVirtual
MachineReconfigurationpageappears.
Thewizardshowswhichfilesitrequires.TheNextbuttonremainsdisableduntileveryitemhasacheck
besideit.
IfyouarerunningConverteronasystemrunningMicrosoftWindows 2000orlater,andyouare
convertingaMicrosoftWindows NT4.0virtualmachineorimage,awarning
messageadvisesthatthe
conversionprocesswillupgradeanyNTFSpartitionsintheresultingvirtualmachinetoanewerversion
oftheNTFSfilesystem.Toavoidupgradingyourfilesystem,clickNointhedialogboxandclickCancel
inthewizardpagetoendtheconversion.Runthe
ConverterfromacomputerrunningWindows NTto
convertthevirtualmachineorimage.
5IntheFilecolumn,selecttheconfigurationfile,insertthemediacontainingthatfile,andclickHaveDisk.
Ifthefileisonyoursystemornetwork,clickHaveDiskandbrowsetoselectthefile.
Converterreads
thefileandputsacheckmarkintherowifsuccessful.
Repeatthisstepforeachrequiredfile,andwhenfinished,clickNext.
Ifthesourcevirtualmachineisnotpassword‐protected,thewizardpresentstheSourceDatapage.Ifthe
sourcevirtualmachineispassword‐protected,theVirtualMachine
Loginpageappears.Typethe
passwordandclickNext.
6 Deselectanyvolumesyoudonotwanttoconvert.
Ifyoudeselectthesystemvolumeoractivevolume,awarningappearsbeforeyougotothenextpage.

SelectConvertalldisks.
Resizethevolumes. ClickSelectvolumesandresizetosaveoraddspace.
Convertindividualvolumesto
correspondingdisks.
SelectCreateaseparatediskforeachvolume.
