Set up the initial VNX configuration
After completing the initial VNX setup, configure key information about the
existing environment so that the storage array can communicate.
Configure the following items in accordance with your IT datacenter
policies and existing infrastructure information:
DNS
NTP
Storage network interfaces
Storage network IP address
CIFS services and Active Directory Domain membership
The reference documents listed in Table 30 provide more information on
how to configure the VNX platform. Storage configuration guidelines on
page 73 provides more information on the disk layout.
Core storage layout
Figure 23 shows the target storage layout for both FC and NFS variants for
500 virtual desktops. Figure 24 shows the target storage layout for both FC
and NFS variants for 1,000 virtual desktops. Figure 27 shows the target
storage layout for both FC and NFS variants for 2,000 virtual desktops.
Provision storage for VMFS datastores (block only)
Complete the following steps in EMC Unisphere to configure FC LUNs on
VNX for storing virtual desktops:
1. Create a block-based RAID 5 storage pool that consists of 10 (for
500 virtual desktops) or 15 (for 1,000 virtual desktops) or 30 (for 2,000
virtual desktops) 300 GB SAS drives. Enable FAST Cache for the
storage pool.
a. Login to EMC Unisphere.
b. Choose the array that will be used in this solution.
c. Go to Storage > Storage Configuration > Storage Pools.
d. Go to the Pools tab.
e. Click Create.
Note: Create Hot Spare disks at this point. The EMC VNX5400 Unified
Installation Guide and the EMC VNX5600 Unified Installation Guide
provide additional information.
2. Configure 1 LUN of 50 GB and 4 LUNs of 485 GB (for 500 virtual
desktops), 2 LUNs of 50 GB and 8 LUNs of 360 GB (for 1,000 virtual
desktops), or 2 LUNs of 50 GB and 16 LUNs of 360 GB (for 2,000 virtual
