Chapter 2 Capturing Applications
To specify application delivery settings in the Setup Capture wizard

IfyoukeepthedefaultdirectoryandcaptureFirefox2.0.0.3,thepathmightappearasC:\Program
Files\VMware\VMware ThinApp\Captures\Mozilla Firefox (2.0.0.3).Theinventoryname
selectedduringthewizarddeterminesthedefaultprojectdirectoryname.
2 (Optional)SelecttheBuildMSIpackagecheckboxand
changetheMSIfilename.
3 (Optional)TocreateasmallerexecutablefileforlocationssuchasaUSBstick,selecttheCompressvirtual
packagecheckbox.
Intypicalcircumstances,compressionreducestheon‐diskstoragerequirementby50percentbutslows
theapplicationperformancewhenThinAppuncompressesinitialblocksthatstarttheapplication.
4ClickSavetocreatetheproject.
Build Virtual Applications
TheapplicationpackageistheexecutablefileorMSIfilethatyouusetorunordeployacapturedapplication.
BeforeyoubuildthepackagefromtheThinAppproject,youcanreviewtheprojectfilestoupdatesettings.
For example,ifyoucaptureFirefox2.0.0.3,thelocationoftheprojectfilesmight
beC:\Program
Files\VMware\VMware ThinApp\Captures\Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.3.Youmightbrowsethe project
beforeyoubuildtheapplicationexecutablefileorMSIfiletoupdateasetting,suchasanActiveDirectory
specification,inthePackage.inifilethatcontainstheparameterssetduringthecaptureprocess.For
informationaboutadvancedconfigurationofthePackage.inifile,
see“ModifyingSettingsinthePackage.ini
File”onpage 22.
Theprojectincludesfolders,suchas%AppData%,thatrepresentfilesystempathsthatmightchangelocations
whenrunningondifferentoperatingsystemsorcomputers.Mostfoldershave##Attributes.inifilesthat
specifytheisolationmodeatthefolderlevel.Theisolationmode
settingatthegranularfolderleveloverrides
theoverallisolationmodesettingofthePackage.inifile.
Ifyoucaptureanapplicationona32‐bitoperatingsystemandwanttobuilditona64‐bitoperatingsystem,
youmustsettheTHINSTALL_BINenvironmentvariableonthemachinewiththe64‐
bitoperatingsystemto
C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware ThinApp.Youdonotneedtobuildthepackageonthesame
machineonwhichyoucapturedtheapplication.Youcancopytheprojecttoanothercomputeranddiscardthe
capturemachine.
To build virtual applications in the Setup Capture wizard

Youcanbuildthepackageatalatertimewiththebuild.batfileinthecapturedapplicationfolder.
For example,aFirefox2.0.0.3path
tothebuild.batfilemightbeC:\Program Files\VMware\VMware
ThinApp\Captures\Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.3\build.bat.
4ClickBuildtobuildanexecutablefileorMSIfilecontainingthefilesyouinstalledduringtheSetup
Captureprocess.
5ClickFinish.
YoucanrebuildthepackageatanytimeafterclickingFinishifyouneedtomakechanges.
