Running vmrun Commands
The vmrun commands have syntax and other requirements that you must follow.
Path to VMX File
VMware stores virtual machines as a package that includes the virtual machine settings file,
filename.vmx, and the virtual disks.
When required, you must provide the path to the .vmx file. The following examples are of paths to a
Windows virtual machine and a Linux virtual machine, respectively, for Mac OS X, OS X, or macOS.
Examples of the vmrun command include the relative path to the .vmx file instead of the absolute path
that follows.
/Users/username/Documents/Virtual\ Machines.localized/Win10.vmwarevm/Win10.vmx
/Users/username/Documents/Virtual\ Machines.localized/Ubuntu16.vmwarevm/Ubuntu16.vmx
Important For vmrun commands that require VMware Tools, install the latest VMware Tools package
and, especially after operating system updates, keep VMware Tools uptodate.
Disabling Dialog Boxes
To prevent the vmrun utility from failing when you provide user input through a dialog box, you can disable
dialog boxes.
The vmrun utility might time out and fail when you use the utility on a virtual machine that requires user
input through a dialog box.
