Chapter 11 Installing and Using VMware Player and ACE Instances
Theexitbehaviorpreferencesallowyoutospecifythefollowing:
Confirmbeforeexitingtheapplication—Ifselected,whenyougivethe
commandtoexitVMwarePlayer,adialogboxappears.Youcanconfirmthe
intentiontoexitVMwarePlayerorclickCanceltocontinueusingVMwarePlayer.
Suspendthevirtualmachinewhenexiting—Ifselected,VMwarePlayer
suspendstheACEandcloses.ThenexttimeyoulaunchVMwarePlayer,theACE
resumesoperationfromthepointwhereitwassuspended.
Poweroffthevirtualmachinewhenexiting—Ifselected,VMwarePlayerpowers
offtheACE.ThenexttimeyoulaunchVMwarePlayer,theACEstartsfroma
powered‐offstateandtheguestoperatingsystemboots.
TheoptiontoCheckthewebforupdatesonstartupisnotavailablewhenyouare
runninganACE.
Removabledevicespreferencesletyouspecifyhowyouconnectanddisconnect
devicessuchasfloppydiskdrives,CDorDVDdrives,Ethernetadaptersandsound
devicesavailableforuseinVMwarePlayer.
Selectoneofthefollowing:
Showontoolbar–Todisconnectandreconnectthedevicesshownonthetoolbar,
clickadevice’sicontotoggleitoffandon.Adevicewithadepressediconis
connected.Ifthedeviceappearslevelwiththetoolbar,itisdisconnected.
Showasmenu–TodisconnectandreconnectthedevicesfromtheDevicesmenu,
clickthenameofadevicetotoggleitoffandon.Acheckbesidethenameofa
deviceindicatesthatitisconnected.Ifthereisnocheckmark,thedeviceis
disconnected.
Taking Snapshots in VMware Player
Ifyoursystemadministratorhasenabledtheoptiontotakeausersnapshot,youcan
takeasinglesnapshotoftheACE.ChoosePlayer>Snapshot>TakeSnapshotand
eitherchoosetotakethesnapshotwhiletheACEisrunningorhaveVMwarePlayer
powerofftheACE,takethe
snapshot,andpowertheACEonagain.(Thesoftwareshuts
downtheACEandrestartsitaftertakingthesnapshot.Youdon’tneedtopoweroffor
restartthemachineyourself.)
Allsnapshotandpoweroperations,includingexitingVMwarePlayer,aredisabled
whilethesoftwar eistakingapowered‐off
snapshot.

OTEIfanACEinstancegetsstuckwhiletakingapowered‐offsnapshot(forexample,
atamessagethatsaysyoucanpoweroffyourmachine),issuethecommandtotakea
powered‐offsnapshotagaintoforcethemachinetopoweroff.Themachinewillbe
poweredonagainand
thesnapshotwillhavebeentaken.
