Before You Begin: Read These Notes About Host Policies
Keepthesefactsinmindasyousethostpolicies:
AhostpolicyisineffectevenwhennoACEinstancesarerunning.Thepolicyeffect
startsimmediatelyafterinstallationandcomesupeverytimethehostsystem
boots.
“Hostpolicy”canrefertobothhostnetworkaccesspolicysettingsandtohost
networkconfigurationsettings(formoreaboutthelatter,see
“NetworkProperties
Packaging”onpage141).
Youneedtocreateanddeployanewpackageinorderforthehostpolicytotake
effect.IfyoucreatepackageswithamanagedACEmasterthatdonotcontaina
hostpolicyandthenlatereditthemaster’snetworkaccesspolicytoincludeahost
policyandpublishthe
change,instancescreatedfrompackagesofthatmasterwill
nothaveahostpolicyapplied.Awarningappearsonthenetworkaccesspolicy
pageifyouattempttoapplyahostpolicyinthisway.
YoucanpackagejustthehostpolicyinaCustompackage,keepingthepackage
sizequitesmall.
IfyousetupnetworkaccessbyusingtheNetworkAccessWizardthroughthe
LaptopConfigurationoption(describedon
page109)andyoudonotmodifyany
ofthedefaultsettingsprovidedbythewizard,theneventhoughthehostis
otherwiseblockedfromallaccesstothenetwork,itisallowedtocommunicate
withDNSandDHCPserverssothezone‐detectionmechanismcanfunction
properly.
Anyrestrictionsonthehost’snetworkaccessalsorestrictnetworkaccessforan
ACEinstanceusingNATnetworking,becausetheNATconnectionisaffectedby
allthepoliciesyouapplytothehost.Ifyousetuprestrictedhostaccessbyusing
therulesetandruleseditorsratherthantheNetwork
AccessWizard,ensurethat
youhaveconfiguredtheACEmaster’svirtualNICstousebridgednetworking.
CAUTIONAhostmachineforACEinstancescanhaveonlyonehostpolicyfile.Ifyou
trytoinstallanACEpackagewithahostpolicyfileonamachinethatalreadyhasahost
policyfileandthenewpackageisfromanACEmasterthatisdifferentfromthe
one
alreadyinstalled,thepackageinstallfails.
CAUTIONHostpolicysettingsmightconflictwithsettingsincertainothersoftware
runningonthehostcomputer—forexample,softwarefirewalls.Forinformationon
