Chapter 6 Setting and Using Policies and Customizing VMware Player
Theexpirationmessageappearswhentheinstancehasexpired.Youcancustomizethe
textofthismessageaswell,addingyourtextafterthe graytext,whichcannotbeedited.
Whentheexpirationmessageappears,theinstancecannotbepoweredon.
WithastandaloneACEinstance,thefixedexpirationdateor
thefixeddaterangeis
establishedatactivationtime.Eachtimetheuserpowersontheinstance,thedate/date
rangeischecked.Ifthedateatpower‐onisbeyondthespecifieddateoroutsidethedate
range,anexpirationmessageappearsandtheinstancecannotbepoweredon.
Expirationchecks
arealsoperformedwhiletheinstanceisrunning.Iftheexpirationis
reached,theexpirationmessageappearsandtheinstanceissuspended.
WithamanagedACEinstance,theexpirationpolicyworkssimilarlyasforstandalone
instances,buttheexpirationpolicyvaluecanbespecifiedonaper‐instancebasis,and
allexpirationvalues,bothforACEmastersandforallACEinstances,aredynamic.A
validdaterangeforanACEmasterappliestoeachofitsassociatedACEinstancesuntil
aninstanceisindividuallyconfiguredwithitsowndaterange.Afterthatconfiguration,
anychangestotheACEmaster’sexpiration
policydonotaffecttheinstance.
Setting Copy Protection Policies
CopyprotectionpoliciesletyouensurethatanACEinstancecanrunonlyfromthe
locationwhereitwasoriginallyinstalled.
EveryACEhasaCPID(copyprotectionidentifier)thatcontainsthepathoftheACEon
thehostfilesystemandeitherthesystem’sBIOSID(usedforstandardACEinstances)
orfilesystemID(usedforpocketACEinstances).Ifcopyprotectionison,Workstation
ACEEditioncomparesthecurrentCPIDwiththestoredCPID.Iftheydon’tmatch,the
instancehasbeenmovedorcopied.FormanagedACEinstances,theCPIDisstoredon
theserverandcanbeupdated
bytheadministrator.ForstandaloneACEinstances,the
CPIDcanbesetusingvmware‐acetoolorhotfixes(onWindowssystems,ifhotfixesare
enabled).
IfyoucopyprotectanACEinstance,itisstillpossiblefortheinstance’sfilestobe
movedorcopied.However,thecopy‐protectedinstancecannot
berunfromthenew
location.
CopyprotectionisappliedtoindividualACEinstances.
