Port Address
Setting
• InstantLoop (factory default setting for all ports)
allows the port to negotiate for addresses. Any
existing address conflicts are resolved to ensure
that each device has a unique address. Devices
connected to this port can communicate with other
switch ports but not with each other. Use
InstantLoop for switch-to-switch connections
(with either the F_Port or the AutoDetect port type
selected), devices that have soft-addressing
capability, and devices with hard addresses.
• Intra-Loop Communication Range allows you to
select one pre-arranged group of addresses to
assign to the port. Under this port address setting,
the loop of devices connected to the port can
communicate with one another and with all other
switch ports. Use Intra-Loop Communication
Range when the loop of devices on the port need
to communicate with each other.
• ExpertMode allows you to select individual address(es)
to assign to the port. Use ExpertMode for devices with
hard addresses or with multiple contiguous addresses
when the devices did not successfully negotiate for
addresses under the InstantLoop port address setting.
Note: A port set to ExpertMode can use only the
AL_PAs assigned through ExpertMode. These assigned
AL_PAs are not available for use by any other ports;
therefore, exercise caution when the topology involves
other hard-addressed devices. In multiple-switch
configurations, ensure that ExpertMode-assigned
addresses are unique on each switch. (A conflict would
prevent the switches from interoperating.)
Address Table
(visible only
when Intra-
Loop
Communicatio
n Range or
ExpertMode is
selected)
Lists all addresses available for the switch, by Loop ID
(0-125) and AL_PA. Allows you to assign addresses to
the selected port by clicking the desired address range
or individual address; the Intra-Loop Communication
Range port address setting allows one pre-arranged
group of addresses per port (for example, the group of
AL_PAs that begin with “0x2”) while the ExpertMode
port address setting allows unlimited individual
addresses within the boundaries of the Address Table.
