Why gigabit networks?
For Ethernet networks, i.e. networks which are connected by twisted pair
cables, two different speed levels are defined, 10 Mbps* technology hardly
figures anymore. 100 Mbps* technology is already widespread and sufficient
for most applications.
If extremely fast connections are required, 1000 Mbps* or gigabit Ethernet
technology can be used. It is important to note that all components, i.e.
network cards, switches, routers and cables, have to be gigabit compatible.
Cables must correspond to at least CAT 5e.
*Mbps = Mega Bits per second
