PHASED ARRAY
Product Code Description
CT0007 Harfang Phased Array System
What is the X-32 ?
The X-32 is the World's first hand-held, battery-operated ultrasound phased array instrument for NDE. It supports up
to 32 channels, both for pulsing and receiving and is compatible with standard Hypertronics connectors. With its own
internal storage, the X-32 can make a real-time continuous recording of the inspection. The X-32 software unit is
based on bulletproof Linux operating system.
Advantages of the X-32
FASTER inspections:
• Simultaneous multi-angle and multi-depth inspection with
one probe
• Reduced manual movement for a greater inspected
volume
• Reduced inspection time
• Reduced personnel exposure to radiation
EASIER inspections:
• Hand-held and lightweight instrument
• Intuitive, user-friendly interface
• Real-time A-scan and scrolling B-scan
• Fastest sectorial scan rendering (s-scan) of the industry
MORE RELIABLE inspections:
• 32 active elements for high volume resolution to precisely
size and map flaws
• Up to 2048 focal laws for maximum coverage with
maximum resolution
• Full programmability for better inspection of complex
geometries

Phased array applications
Phased array ultrasonic examination is used for several
applications for in service inspection of power plants and
petrochemical plants, as well as for the inspection of various
manufactured goods from the automotive and aerospace
industries.
Some applications include particular additional benefits that are made possible only by phased array technology. For
example, using an array to examine the blade attachment hook of a turbine rotor disc will also provide improved
characterization of the configuration of the disc rim, which is normally not known in advance. Also, array examination
of reactor pressure vessel welds eases discrimination between subsurface flaws and those that are actually surface-
connected. This discrimination is important because these two flaw categories have different consequences in terms
of the flaw evaluation and the re-inspection schedule.
For the industries using large scale steel structures, the advantages of using ultrasonic phased array speak for
themselves: increased maneuverability of the ultrasonic beam, greater area of insonification from a fixed position,
improved resolution due to larger aperture, thus a reduced inspection time.
