GLOSSARY OF TERMS
UTC - Up The Coax transmission.
UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) - A cable medium with one or more pairs
of twisted insulated copper conductors bound in a single sheath, with no
overall or individual screen. Now the most common method of bringing
telephone signals and data to the desktop.
Varifocal - A type of lens which enables a manual selection between two
focal lengths to give the desired picture view.
VBS (Video, Burst, Sync) - A composite colour video signal.
Verification - The means of verifying that an intrusion has taken place.
Can be via audio, visual or sequential means.
Vertical Interval Switching - Sequential switchers waiting until the
current field has finished before they display the next camera, even
though the dwell time has elapsed.
VESA (Video Electronics Standard Association) - A group of standards
developed for the purpose of defining video resolutions greater than
VGA.
VHS (Video Home System) - Name given to 1/2” tape format domestic
video recorder.
Video - Visual or picture information. The translation of moving or
still images into electrical signals. The Red, Green, Blue and Sync are
separate electrical signals in computer video. In VHS video, Red, Green,
Blue and Sync are all in one signal. In S-VHS video, the Red, Green, Blue
and Sync are separate.
Video Motion Detection (VMD) - A system that uses the video signal
from a camera to determine if there is any movement in the picture and
set of an alarm.
Viewing Angle - The angle at which a person is able to stand in regard
to an image and still be able to see the entire image without distortion.
The typical viewing angle of plasma displays is 160º.
VLAN (Virtual LAN) - Devices on a LAN or LANs that are configured
for communications as if they were attached to the same wire, when in
reality they are located on a number of different LAN segments.
VPN (Virtual Private Network) - This creates a secure “tunnel” between
the points within the VPN. Only devices with the correct “key” will be
able to work within the VPN.
VS (Video Sync) - A composite monochrome video signal.
WAN (Wide Area Network) - A data-communications network spread
across a wide geographic area and incorporating a large number of
users. A WAN often uses transmission devices provided by common
carriers. Examples of WANs include Frame Relay, SMDS and X.25.
Watt - A unit of power or activity equal to 107 CGS units of power, or to
work done at the rate of one joule a second. An English horsepower is
approximately equal to 746 Watts.
Wavelets™ - A suite of digital compression tools that is becoming
popular in the CCTV industry, giving good picture quality at higher
compression rates.
WDR - A camera with Wide Dynamic Range WDR is able to operate in
variable light conditions (known as lux levels). Wide Dynamic Range is
now a key security camera specification especially when the camera is
viewing an area of difficult lighting conditions.
Web Server - A Web Server is a program, which allows Web browsers to
retrieve files from computers connected to the Internet. The Web server
listens for requests from Web browsers and upon receiving a request for
a file sends it back to the browser.
White Balance - An electronic process used in video cameras to retain
true colours. It is performed electronically and is set on the basis of a
white object in the picture.
Windows - Graphical user interface.
W-LAN (Wireless LAN) - A wireless LAN is a wireless local area network
that uses radio waves as its carrier: where the network connections for
end-users are wireless.
Y - The black and white video signal.
Y/C - A method of sending video pictures in 2 separate parts down
2 separate cables. The component parts are Y (the black and white
portion) and C (the colour portion).
Zone - Identity of detection device(s) connected to an Intruder alarm
system.
Zoom - To enlarge or reduce the size of an image primarily by varying
lens focal length.
