In Arctic GPRS gateway, there is a switch that controls the RS1 serial port’s mode. There are two
operating modes;
Console for connecting to Arctic’s command line interface
RS1 for using the port with RS-232 applications
When toggling the console switch, the power of the Arctic must be switched off. The Arctic reads
the switch position only at boot.
Question 7
Why I’m seeing this error at Arctic boot:
JFFS: Failed to build tree.
JFFS: Failed to mount device 2a:02.
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 2a:02
Answer
The root file system is corrupted or erased, usually because of failed upgrade attempt.
Question 8
Why I’m seeing this error at Arctic boot:
arctic> boot
Enabling watchdog
## Booting image at ff820000 ...
Bad Magic Number
arctic>
Answer
The system is not able to load the kernel. Again, the message is typically occurring because of
failed flash memory upgrade attempt.
Question 9
I have accidentally disabled the Web Server in Arctic. Now I cannot connect to the unit via web
browser. How can I correct the situation?
Answer
The WWW-server of the Graphical User Interface in Arctic is implemented with the embedded "Boa
web-server".
1. As you have disabled the web server in Arctic’s User Interface, it must first be enabled.
If you are able to log in via Telneting to Arctic’s IP address, proceed to step 3.
2. If the IP address of the Arctic is not known, there is a way to connect via serial console.
This is done so that you will connect a serial cable (DB9 female connectors, a "null-modem cable")
between the PC and Arctic. Then you must check that the Serial port 1 in Arctic is put to "Console"
mode by the switch in Arctic’s front panel. Do not change the switch position, while the power is on
in the Arctic.
When you have the serial connection between the PC (your computer) and Arctic, you can use e.g.
PuTTY-terminal emulation program to connect to the Arctic. Alternatively, you can use the
HyperTerminal program, which is found in Windows by default.
Configure the terminal emulation program as follows, the examples from PuTTY:
Click the "Serial" button in the “Session” settings and change the "Speed" from "9600" to "19200".
The "Serial line" should match the serial port where the null modem cable is connected to your
computer; typically it is "COM1". Now you can click "Open" to open the connection between your
computer and Arctic.
If you encounter problems with connecting, check the rest of the serial settings by clicking the
"Serial" menu-item from the left tab of the Putty Window. The settings should be as follows:
