16.3. Changing passwords
After the installation and testing, it is recommended to change the default passwords. The
passwords can be changed from graphical user interfaces of M2M GW and Arctic. Follow the
instructions below.
16.3.1. Changing the passwords in M2M GW
In M2M GW’s Webmin GUI, navigate to “SystemÆChange Passwords”. Select a user, which
password is changed. Enter the new password twice to the respective fields in GUI. Keep the
Change password in other modules” tick box ticked. Click “Change” to apply the changes.
16.3.2. Changing the root password in Arctic
In Arctic Configurator GUI, navigate to “SystemÆPassword” and enter the new root password
two times to the respective fields in GUI. Click “Apply” to make the change.
17. Appendix A: IP v.4 addressing and networking
The following introduction describes the terms related to the planning and setting up an end to end
network connection with Viola Systems equipment. See the RFC 791 document, available at
http://www.ietf.org/
for detailed information on IP v.4.
17.1. OSI- and TCP -models
The OSI-model is usually referenced, while describing the intercommunication between computers
and computer networks. Even as the TCP/IP protocol model doesn't directly map into the OSI-
model, it is useful to understand the different layers in data transfer.
Unit Layer Function example
Data 7 Application Networking process to application
Data 6 Presentation Data encryption
Data 5 Session Host to host connections
Segment 4 Transport End-to-end connections
Packet 3 Network Logical addressing
Frame 2 Data link Physical addressing
Bit 1 Physical Wire
Table 6: OSI-model
There are plenty of tutorials in Internet regarding OSI- and TCP/IP models. Refer to e.g. Wikipedia
for more information.
17.2. Public and private IP addresses
The public IP addresses are routable unique addresses in Internet. Private IP addresses are not
routable in Internet, but they can be routed between the private networks.
The Viola Systems M2M solution needs at least one public IP address, for the connection to the
Internet. It may be assigned to M2M Gateway (see Figure 6: Scenario 1, M2M GW connected with
public IP address) or it can be a company router, which has to be configured to forward packets to
M2M (see Figure 7: Scenario 2, M2M GW behind the company firewall).
