o Set as "None" if there is no need for accessing other devices than the
M2M GW.
o Set as "Tunnel the following network" for informing the Arctic which
network is reachable behind the VPN tunnel at M2M side. This is used
e.g. for accessing devices in M2M’s LAN, e.g. SCADA server.
o Set as “Default route” if the SSH-VPN tunnel is the primary
communication channel for all hosts in Arctic’s LAN.
Set as "Tunnel the following network" in this example.
Note: If “Default route” is enabled, the other default gateways (Ethernet
and GPRS) must be disabled.
Leave other settings as defaults.
14.6. Configuring the Monitor settings of the Arctic
The “Monitor” is a failure detection and recovery framework in Arctic. It is implemented with:
• Ping monitor for detecting the failures in communication path
• The GPRS/EDGE network connection re-establishment capability
• Ability to reboot the device in case of errors
The monitor sends ICMP echo messages (ping) to chosen target at the other end of
communication path. The ping target is selected on basis of what is the carrier of the primary
connection. Typically the M2M GW’s VPN peer IP address is set as ping target because the VPN
tunnel is in most cases the primary communication channel.
Note: It is essential to set the Monitor’s ping target. If the ping target is not set, the connectivity is
not periodically verified and the Arctic’s connection redundancy and recovery capabilities are not
enabled.
