9. Tools needed for initial setup
9.1. Place for making the initial setup
It is assumed that the M2M GW and Arctic are locally accessible, while performing the initial
configuration. Installing and configuring a distributed environment may cause unnecessary site
visits.
It is a good practice to configure the Arctic’s locally and first test the connection with the end
application. If a serial device is connected, test the serial to TCP/UDP connectivity by connecting
the Arctic to local area network. When the serial connection tested, implement the VPN connection
and test end-to-end connectivity. After the connectivity has been tested, the Arctics can be placed
to the field.
9.2. Installation computer
A computer is needed for configuring the M2M GW and Arctic. The computer - a desktop or a
laptop should have at least the following characteristics:
• Ethernet interface, twisted pair (10/100 or optionally Gigabit Ethernet)
• Serial port (optional, native serial port preferred over USB-Serial adapter)
• Capability of running required software or their OS-dependent equivalents (see chapter
9.4: Software below).
9.3. Cables
• At least "category 5" unshielded twisted pair Ethernet cables are recommended.
• A cross-connected Ethernet cable (or an Ethernet switch with direct cables) is needed for
connecting the M2M GW and Arctic to the computer used for configuration.
• Optionally, a cross-connected serial cable is needed for connecting via serial interface to
Arctic's console.
9.4. Software
The Windows XP is assumed as the default operating system in this document, but almost any
contemporary operating system can be used. Refer to the documentation of any other operating
system for achieving the same functionality as Windows XP equipped with the following programs
(programs marked as optional are not needed but they may help in certain cases):
• Web browser
(Internet Explorer or Firefox, http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox
)
• Telnet/SSH client
(e.g. PuTTY, http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html
) or
Windows XP’s native Telnet client.
• SCP program
(optional, e.g. WinSCP, http://winscp.net/eng/download.php
)
• Wireshark
(optional, http://www.wireshark.org/download.html
)
