Calculating Record Duration
Likewise, you can calculate how long a given HD size will record for, using the same set of expressions. The
following equation calculates the total number of Hours the system will record.
((S x C) / R) / 1.26 = H
H= Hours of recording duration
R= Rate of image capture, (images per second)
C= Compression ratio (ex: 15 for 15:1)
S= Size of Hard Drive, in Gigabytes
Example: A Customer wants to use DVMS 400 to record 4 cameras, with each camera updated every second.
Therefore, the capture rate is 4 fps. The 20:1 compression ratio gave acceptable picture quality. The Customer
wants to use a system with a 27GB Hard drive, and wants to know how long it will record for.
((27 x 20) / 4) / 1.26 = 107 Hours record duration
Picture Quality at different Compression Settings
Compression ratio settings cannot be accurately expressed in Horizontal lines of resolution. However, we can
provide some guidelines on the level of picture quality.
10:1 Best Quality, virtually identical to original image. ~540 H. Lines
15:1 2

Best Quality, very slight artifacts in image. Perhaps best compromise in picture size/quality. ~ SVHS
quality.
20:1 Medium Quality, moderate artifacting. Good for general use, with moderate detail. ~VHS quality.
25:1 Medium-Low Quality, Obvious artifacting. Good for verifying activity or identification if close-up. Sub-VHS
quality.
30:1 Low Quality, Major artifacting. Verify activity with low detail. Not suitable for identification.
35:1 Lowest Quality, Suitable only for verifying activity of large objects or general movement.

Remote Connectivity Overview
DVMS can be remotely accessed via LAN, Modem or RS232 using the Windows based Remote Access Software
RAS. Via RAS, you can remotely view live or prerecorded images, listen to remote audio, and record the video to
the local PC hard drive.
