"The computer(s) could not be managed (general failure)" error
message
General errors are generated by the manage/add computer system and are formatted as "The
computer(s) could not be managed (general failure %s)" where %s is replaced with a number
identifying the specific error.
Number Meaning
0 A general catastrophic error occurred (possibly dealing with Windows Sockets).
1 An invalid network was found. The computer may have been attached to a
network without a DNS.
2 Reserved for future use.
3 Invalid command line.
4 No computers selected to be managed.
5 Memory allocation error.
Windows Internet Connection Firewall conflicts with port settings
If you install Intel Server Manager on a computer running Windows Server 2003 SP1 and have
Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) enabled, you may experience problems due to ICF blocking
ports used by Intel Server Manager. To allow Intel Server Manager to function with ICF enabled,
make the following changes to the advanced settings in Windows Network Connections.
1. Open Network Connections from the Windows Start menu.
2. Right-click Local Area Connections and select Properties.
3. Click the Advanced tab, then click Settings.
4. Click Add to enter each of the following port settings. Enter the IP address of the
computer on which the administrator console is installed.

Blade chassis cannot be managed due to failed DNS resolution
For Intel Server Manager to manage a blade chassis management module (MM), your network
must have a properly configured method for DNS resolution and reverse DNS lookup must be
available. In addition, there must be unrestricted SNMP access to the MM. If you are unable to
