The object tracts with an absolute average velocity of greater than 5 miles per hour are shown in
Figure 5.7. It is clear that the vehicles with an average absolute velocity greater than 12 miles per
hour are traveling in the far lane given the shape of the velocity profiles. Note that the speed
limit on this road is 15 miles per hour. The rest of the vehicles are traveling in the lane of
interest, each showing a dip in velocity as they approach the stop sign. The stop sign is located at
the 20 ft marker, and the majority of the dips occur in the 10–20 ft range. Note that the
horizontal position plotted is for the center of the vehicle, not the leading edge. Therefore, it is
the case that the minimum velocity for vehicles that fail to come to a complete stop at the stop
sign occurs just before or at the location of the stop sign.
