Call Handling 1-68
Chapter 1: Basic System Features
SBX IP Programming & Operations Guide
CONDITIONS
• A new message or a voice mail from an external source is recognized in the user’s
mailbox as a message that has not yet been heard.
• A saved message is defined as a message in the mailbox to which the user has listened,
but has not deleted or moved.
• Also see:
- "Message Wait Indicator LEDs" on page 1-64.
- "Message Wait Indicator (MWI) - SLT Feature" on page 1-68.

Ringing vs. Idle MWI LED States for IP and Digital Phones
• Ringing state: The Message Indicator LED flashes at the rate of 1 flash per 500 ms when
a new call is received. It continues flashing until the call is answered, forwarded, or
abandoned. This occurs regardless of whether or not the mailbox has a message, or
whether or not a Call Back request is active on the station.
• Idle State with new messages: When a new message is in the voice mailbox or external
VM, the Message Indicator LED and the Callback button (if programmed) flash at the rate
of 1 flash per 1000 ms.
• Message Wait LEDs for voice mail notification are not supported.
• Idle State with message wait request and no new voice message: When a station
Message Wait request is active on a station, and there is no new or external voice mail
messages, the Message Indicator LED is extinguished. The Callback button (if
programmed) flashes at the rate of 1 flash per 1000 ms.
• Idle State with no callback request and no new message: When no station message wait
request is active on the station and no new message is in the VMIB or external VM, the
Message Indicator LED, and the Callback button (if programmed) are extinguished.
Mailbox Buttons
• In the idle state, on any IP (including SoftPhone) or digital phone, when there is an
un-played (new) message in the assigned mailbox, all pre-programmed flex buttons
assigned as mailbox buttons flash red at the rate of 1 flash per 1000 ms.
• When there is no new, unheard message in the assigned mailbox, the assigned
mailbox button is extinguished.
• Also see "Mailbox Buttons" on page C-18.
