Using the Gray Card to Set White Balance
You can choose an automatic white-balance setting (AWB
or A) in your camera or, for best results, use the gray card
in a reference image to help customize WB. Using the gray
card, your camera can measure the reflected light from
this neutral surface and find the exact color temperature.
Note: You must make a new white-balance reference image
with the gray card each time the lighting conditions change.
1. Position the gray card in front of your subject or at the
location where your subject will be photographed with
the exact lighting conditions. Fill the viewfinder with the
gray card, as this photo will be used for your reference
image.
2. Access your camera’s WB menu, and select the custom
mode.
3. Use the image you just took of the gray card for the
custom white-balance option. (You may need to refer
to your camera’s manual for the specific steps, as this
process varies between manufacturers and models.) This
will then set your camera to capture images with proper
color rendering for the current lighting conditions.
