System Overview
1.1 Introduction
This chapter presents an overview of the Rack-Mountable VAX 4000
Model 500 computer system.
The Rack-Mountable VAX 4000 Model 500 computer system (see Fig-
ure 1–1) houses all components in a BA441 enclosure. Figure 1–2 shows
the dimensions of the enclosure. This enclosure is a slide mounted chas-
sis that fits into a standard 48.26-cm (19-inch) EIA enclosure and houses
the following major units:
• Front Assemblies
— Mass storage shelf
— System control panel (SCP)
— System ON/OFF switch
• Card cage
— DSSI and Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) connectors
— Console bulkhead assembly
— Central processing unit (CPU) module
— Memory modules
