Cont rolling exha ust em ission
Through design-related measures,
primarily in the fuel injec tion and ignition
systems (in combination with the catalytic
converter), the proportion of noxious
materials in the exhaust, such as carbon
monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (CH) and
nitrogen oxides (NO
x
), is reduced to a
minimum.
Control indicator for exhaust emissions
Control indica tor Z illuminates for a few
se co nd s w he n th e ignition is switch e d on .
If it i lluminates when the engine is running,
there is a fault in the em ission control
sy ste m or with the d ies el pa rticle filter 3.
The permitted emission values may be
exc ee ded. Consult a workshop.
Flashing with the engine running indicates
a fault that may damage the catalytic
conv erter. The ve hicle’s electronic s yste m
will switch to an emergency running
prog ra mme so you may continue to drive
without causing dama ge, by slowing dow n
until the flashing stops and the control
indica tor is steadily lit. Consult a workshop
immed iately.
Control indicator for engine electronics
Control indicator 3 illum ina tes for a few
seconds when the ignition is switched on.
If it illuminates when the eng ine is running,
there is a fault in the engine electronics.
The electronics switch to the emergency
running programme, fuel consumption
ma y increase and the driv eab ility of the
ve hicle m ay be affec ted.
In some cases, the fault can be eliminated
by sw itching the engine off and back on
aga in. If the control indicator illuminates
again when the engine is running, have the
cause of the fault eliminated by a
workshop.
