The side airbags are identified b y the word
"Airbag" on the outb oa rd sides of the front
seat backrests, and protect front sea t
occupants in the event of a severe side-
impac t.
The side airbag system comprises:
z an airbag with inflator in the outboard
sides of the driver's and front
passenger's seat backrests,
z the control elec tronics ,
z the side-impact sensors,
z the a irb ag sys tem s con trol in dicato r v in
the in strume nt clus ter .
The side airbag system will be triggered:
z depending on the severity of the
accident,
z depending on the type of impact,
z within the range shown in the illustration,
z independently of the front airbag
system.
When triggered, the side a irb ag infla tes in
milliseconds a nd forms a safety cushion for
the driver and /or front passenger in the
respective door area. The risk of injury to
the upper b od y and pelvis in the event of a
side-impact is thereb y sub stantially
reduc ed.
9 Warnin g
There m ust be no objec ts in the area in
which the airbag inflates or in the area
between the seat backrests and the
vehicle body.
Do not place ha nds, arms or other body
parts on the cov ers of the airbag systems.
