Operation Manual

S afety sy stems 77
When triggered, the driver’s and front
passengers airbags inflate in milliseconds
and form safety cushions for the driver and
front passenger. Forward movement of
driver and front passenger is checked and
the risk of injuries to the upper body and
head are thereby substantially reduced.
z No impairment of view will occur, as
airb ags inflate and deflate so quickly.
The front airbag system will not be
triggered in the event of:
z the ignition being switched off,
z minor frontal collisions,
z accidents in which the vehicle overturns,
z collisions involving a side or rear-impact
where it would not be of benefit to the
occupants.

The side airbags are identified by the word
"Airbag" on the outboard sides of the front
seat backrests, and protect front seat
occupants in the event of a severe side-
impact.
The side airbag sy ste m comprises:
z an airbag with inflator in the outboard
sides of the driver's a nd front
passe ng er's se at back rests,
z the control electronics,
z the side-impact sensors,
z the airbag sy ste ms control indicator v in
the instrument cluster.
9 Wa rning
The front airbag system provides
optimum protection when the seat, seat
belt, backrest and head restraint are
correctly adjusted.
Ad just the driver's seat according to the
occupant's height such that, with the
driv er sitting upright, the steering wheel is
held in the area of its upper spok es with
the driver's arms slightly bent.
The drivers seat should be as far back as
possible without compromising the
drivers ability to reach the ped als,
steering wheel or controls.
The front p assenge rs se at should be a s
far back a s possible, with the backrest
upright. Do not place the head, body,
hands or feet on the cover of the airbag
system .
Do not pla ce objects, children or pets in
the area in which the airbag s inflate.
9 Warning
Seat belts must therefore always be worn.
The front airbag system serves to
supplement the three-point seat belts.
If you do not wear your sea t belt, you risk
being seriously injured, or even thrown
from the vehicle, in the event of an
accident.
The seat belt helps to keep you in the
correct seat position, in w hich the front
airbag system will provide you w ith
effective protection in the event of an
accident.
