Whitewash Wood Enhancer
PRODUCT APPLICATION
SURFACE PREPARATION
Remove any existing finishes with sandpaper or paint
stripper. Prepare bare wood for staining by sanding in the
direction of the grain. Begin with #120 grit sandpaper and
progress though #150, #180 and #220 grits. Before staining,
remove all sanding dust and dirt with a vacuum and grease
or glue with a clean rag dampened with mineral spirits.
WARNING! If you scrape, sand or remove old paint, you
may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO
LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS SUCH AS
BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN.
PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID EXPOSURE.
Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator to control lead exposure.
Clean up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and a wet mop.
Before you start, find out how to protect yourself and your
family by contacting the National Lead Information Hotline at
1-800-424-LEAD or log on to www.epa.gov/lead.
TESTING COLOR
Be sure to test your stain to verify the desired color. To test,
apply the stain in an inconspicuous area.
PRODUCT APPLICATION (cont.)
APPLICATION
When using more than one can, pour all contents together in
a separate container and mix well to ensure uniformity. Stir or
shake material thoroughly before and occasionally during use.
For best results, use at a temperature between 60°F and
90°F. 1 hour dry time. Allow longer dry time on damp, humid
days.
For a uniform coating of Whitewash over bare or stained
wood: Apply liberally with a brush or clean lint-free rag. Allow
to penetrate for 2-3 minutes then remove excess to ensure
proper dry time and adhesion of topcoat by wiping with a rag
in the direction of the grain. Longer penetration times will lead
to more opaque layer of Whitewash. After 1 hour an additional
coat can be applied to build to desired opacity.
For a distressed dry brush look over bare or stained
wood: Dip the tip of a dry bristle brush into the Whitewash,
dab on a cloth until semi-dry, then use light, feathery strokes
in the direction of the wood grain. Allow to dry 1 hour.
For a vintage Whitewash layer over paint or stain: Once
stain or paint is completely dry, lightly sand entire piece using
#220 grit sandpaper. Remove dust. Cover entire surface area
with Whitewash and allow to penetrate for 30 seconds. Wipe
away to desired effect. Allow to dry for 1 hour.
PROTECTING THE WOOD
To complete your wood project and for the best protection,
finish with any water-based Varathane Polyurethane
depending on your project needs. Polyurethane can be
applied 1 hour after application.
NOTE: Oil based polyurethanes add an amber hue to the
finish.

Up to 275 square feet per quart.
