SURFACE PREPARATION
Proper surface preparation is important. Surfaces must be
clean, dry and sound. Remove any existing finishes with
sandpaper or stripper. Prepare bare wood for staining by
sanding in the direction of the grain. Begin with #150 grit
sandpaper and progress through #180 and #220 grits.
Before using product, remove all sanding dust with a
vacuum or tack rag and dirt, grease, oil or glue with a
clean rag dampened with mineral spirits.
WARNING! If you scrape, sand, or remove old paint, you
may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO
LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS, SUCH AS
BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN.
PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID
EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator to
control lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a HEPA
vacuum and a wet mop. Before you start, find out how to
protect yourself and your family by contacting the National
Lead Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or log on to
www.epa.gov/lead.

TESTING COLOR
Be sure to test Varathane Polyurethane Metallic finish to
verify the desired color. To test, apply in an inconspicuous
area before beginning. For a deeper color, additional coats
may be applied.
APPLICATION
Use adequate ventilation at all times. Apply only when air
(ambient) temperature is between 55-90°F (13-32°C) and
the relative humidity is below 85%. Stir the contents
thoroughly before use. DO NOT SHAKE. Shaking will
create bubbles in the finish. Apply with a high quality,
synthetic bristle brush or a foam brush in the direction of
the grain. Apply a thin coat until a uniform film has been
achieved. To prevent brush marks, avoid excessive
brushing. Some grain raise may occur. If so, lightly sand
the surface using #220 grit sandpaper. Remove all
sanding dust before applying additional coats. Additional
coats can be applied with one hour dry time between
coats. Lightly sand between coats with #320 grit
sandpaper. Do not use steel wool. Additional coats will
enhance the metallic effect.
DRY AND RECOAT TIMES
Dry times are based on 70°F and 50% relative humidity.
Dry times may be affected by temperature, humidity and
ventilation. Allow more time at cooler temperatures.
Polyurethane Metallic will dry to touch in 1 hour and can
be recoated after 1 hour. Allow 48 hours to cure before
moderate use of the project. Allow 7 days for full cure.
