SURFACE PREPARATION
Refurbishing Existing finished wood may be refurbished
without complete removal of the previous coating. After
using furniture polishes for many years, wood can absorb
contaminants that can interfere with Varathane Clear
Rippled. The surface must be free from wax, silicones, oils
or other contaminants. Surfaces must be thoroughly
cleaned and abraded before applying Varathane Clear
Rippled.
Bare Wood Surfaces must be clean, dry and sound.
Remove any dust, grease, oil or wax. Sand the area
smooth, progressing from #120 grit sandpaper to #200 grit
sandpaper. Do not use steel wool. Vacuum surface ot
remove dust. Wipe surface with a clean, lint-free cloth.
WARNING! If you scrape, sand, or remove old paint, you
may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO
LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS, SUCH AS
BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN.
PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID
EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator to
control lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a HEPA
vacuum and a wet mop. Before you start, find out how to
protect yourself and your family by contacting the National
Lead Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or log on to
www.epa.gov/lead.
PRODUCT APPLICATION (cont.) .
APPLICATION OVER WOOD
Apply Varathane Clear Rippled directly over fully cured
stained or painted wood. Test a sample for product
compatibility. For best results on stained wood, use
Varathane Wood Stain.
APPLICATION
Use adequate ventilation at all times. Apply only when air
(ambient) temperature is between 60-90°F (15-32°C) and
the relative humidity is below 85%. Stir the contents
thoroughly before use. DO NOT SHAKE. Shaking will
create bubbles in the finish. Apply with a high quality,
synthetic bristle brush. Apply in the direction of the wood
grain in one thick, smooth uniform coat. If a more dramatic
effect is desired or if refinishing a previously coated
surface, sand lightly with #220 grit sandpaper. Remove all
sanding dust
DRY AND RECOAT TIMES
Dry times are based on 70°F and 50% relative humidity.
Dry times may be affected by temperature, humidity and
ventilation. Allow more time at cooler temperatures.
Polyurethane Clear Rippled Finish will dry to touch in 2
hours and can be recoated after 2 hours. Allow 48 hours
to cure before moderate use of the project. Allow 7 days
for full cure.
