.PRODUCT APPLICATION .
SURFACE PREPARATION
To ensure proper adhesion, surfaces must be clean, dry,
and free of old finishes, dirt, oils or other foreign matter.
Old finishes in poor condition must be removed. Sand the
area smooth, progressing with 120 to 220 grit sandpaper
and vacuum surface to remove dust. Do not use steel
wool as rust may develop after the finish has been
applied. Wipe surface with clean, lint-free cloth.
UNFINISHED SURFACES – Sand using 180-220 grit
sandpaper and remove all sanding dust using a vacuum,
tack cloth, or rag dampened with mineral spirits. If a filler
or putty is used, make sure it does not contain wax and
allow enough time for it to dry thoroughly.
STAINED OR PAINTED WOOD – Apply stain prior to
applying Varathane Sanding Sealer. Follow the
manufacturer’s directions for application of the stain. Allow
the stain to thoroughly dry before applying Varathane
Sanding Sealer. Refer to the stain manufacturer’s label for
dry times.
WARNING! If you scrape, sand or remove old paint, you
may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO
LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS SUCH AS
BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN.
PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID
EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator to
control lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a HEPA
vacuum and a wet mop. Before you start, find out how to
protect yourself and your family by contacting the National
Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or log on to
www.epa.gov/lead.
PRODUCT APPLICATION (cont.)
APPLICATION
Use in an area with adequate ventilation such as an open
garage. Apply only when air (ambient) temperature is
between 55-90°F (13-32°C) and relative humidity is below
85%. Use full strength. Do not thin. Stir thoroughly before
and during use. To prevent bubbles in the finish, DO NOT
SHAKE, do not over-brush, or apply with a roller.
Apply using a good quality synthetic bristle brush, foam
brush or applicator. Apply in the direction of wood grain in
smooth, uniform coat. Lower temperatures and/or higher
humidity may cause slower dry times. Lightly sand the
surface with 220-280 grit sandpaper. A powder should
develop when sanded. Do not over-sand to avoid removal
of the sanding sealer or previous stain. Remove sanding
dust with a vacuum or a clean lint-free rag.
Once the sanding sealer is dry, apply the wood finish of
choice. For best results, use any Varathane Polyurethane.
Follow the manufacturer’s direction. Allow the finish to dry
24 hours before light use. Wait 3 days before subjecting
surface to normal use.
APPLICATION TIPS
Product appears milky when wet but dries to a clear
coating. Do not apply in direct sunlight. Use care when
applying over white or pastel paints as discoloration may
occur. Test Varathane Sanding sealer in an inconspicuous
area before beginning.
CLEAN UP
Clean application tools and equipment with soap and
water.
