PRODUCT APPLICATION
SURFACE PREPARATION
Remove any existing finishes with sandpaper or stripper.
Prepare bare wood for staining by sanding in the direction of
the grain. Begin with #120 grit sandpaper and progress
though #150, #180 and #220 grits.
Before staining, remove all sanding dust and dirt with a
vacuum, tack cloth, or rag dampened with mineral spirits.
For grease or glue, remove with a clean rag dampened with
mineral spirits. Soft woods such as pine, fir, or maple require
a wood conditioner. Use Varathane Wood Conditioner
before staining.
WARNING! If you scrape, sand or remove old paint, you may
release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO LEAD DUST
CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS SUCH AS BRAIN DAMAGE,
ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN. PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD
ALSO AVOID EXPOSURE.
PRODUCT APPLICATION (cont.)
SURFACE PREPARATION (cont.)
Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator to control lead exposure. Clean
up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and a wet mop. Before you start,
find out how to protect yourself and your family by contacting the
National Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or log on to
www.epa.gov/lead.
TESTING COLOR
Be sure to test your stain to verify the desired color. To test,
apply the stain in an inconspicuous area. When testing on soft
wood, be sure to sand and condition the test area. To achieve
a lighter color, wipe the stain immediately after application.
For a deeper color, allow the stain to penetrate for longer
before wiping away excess or applying additional coats of
stain. Do not let the stain dry before wiping off the excess.
APPLICATION
Use only when air (ambient) temperature is between 55-90°F
(13-32°C) and relative humidity is below 85%. Stir the
contents thoroughly to ensure any settled pigment is re-
dispersed before application. Apply with a brush or clean, lint-
free cloth. Apply the stain across the grain until the wood is
saturated on top. Allow stain to penetrate wood for 5-10
minutes before wiping away excess. Longer penetration time
will result in darker color. Do not let the stain dry before
wiping off the excess. Wipe the excess stain off in the
direction of the wood grain. If desired, a second coat can be
applied after 2 hours to darken color. Do not sand between
stain coats.
COVERAGE
One quart will cover up to 150 square feet. One gallon will
cover up to 600 square feet. Coverage will depend on the
type of wood and porosity.
DRY AND RECOAT TIMES
Dry and recoat times are based on 70°F and 50% relative
humidity. Allow more time at cooler temperatures. Dries to the
touch in 1-2 hours, dries to handle in 2 hours and can be
recoated in 2 hours.
PROTECTING THE WOOD
Allow Varathane Premium Wood Stains to dry for 8 hours
when applying an oil-based finish or 24 hours before applying
a water-based finish.
CLEAN UP
Clean application tools and equipment with mineral spirits or
paint thinner.
