® DIRECT-VENT FIREPLACE PRE-INSTALLATION PREPARATION LOCATION AND SPACE REQUIREMENTS Determine the safest and most efficient location for your Vanguard direct-vent fireplace. Make sure that rafters and wall studs are not in the way of the venting system. Choose a location where the heat output is not affected by drafts, air conditioning ducts, windows or doors. Figure 2 shows some common locations. Read all venting information in this manual.

A chase is not required for such venting. NOTICE: Treatment of firestops and construction of the chase may vary from building type to building type. Mark the wall for a 10" square hole (for noncombustible material such as masonry block or concrete, a 7 1/2" diameter hole is acceptable). See Figure 12. The center of the hole should line up with the center-line of the horizontal rigid vent pipe.

Each figure includes a chart with vertical minimum/maximum and horizontal maximum dimensions which must be met. All connections must be sealed with high temperature silicone sealant as specified in the second warning on page 7. Lower the support box through the hole in the roof until the bottom of the box extends at least 2" below the ceiling (see Figure 23). Align the support box vertically and horizontally using a level.

OWNER’S MANUAL VENTING INSTALLATION Continued HIGH ALTITUDE INSTALLATION Your Vanguard direct-vent fireplace has been AGA tested and approved for elevations from 0-2000 feet and CGA certified for elevations from 0-4500 feet. When installing this fireplace at an elevation above 2000 feet (in the USA), you may need to decrease the input rating by changing the existing burner orifice to a smaller size. Reduce input 4% for each 1000 feet above sea level.

WARNING: Never use an open flame to check for a leak. Apply commercial leak test solution to all gas joints. Bubbles forming show a leak. Correct all leaks at once. The gas control valve is secured underneath the firebox with two brackets fastened to the firebox bottom.

Each log is marked with a number. These numbers will help you identify the log when installing. It is very important to install these logs exactly as instructed. Do not modify logs.
OWNER’S MANUAL OPERATING GUIDELINES AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS When lit for the first time, the appliance may emit a slight odor for about 16 - 24 hours. This is normal and is due to the “curing” of the logs and the “burn-in” of internal paints and lubricants used in the manufacturing process. Keep compartments, logs, burners, and area surrounding the logs clean by vacuuming or brushing at least twice a year. Temporary removal of the log set may ease the cleaning of the burner and pilot assembly.

Immediately light the pilot by repeatedly depressing the piezo spark ignitor until a flame appears. Continue to hold for about one (1) minute after the pilot is lit. Release gas control knob and it will pop back. Pilot should remain lit. If it goes out, repeat steps 5 through 8.

Alterations may have occurred during shipping and handling. Call a qualified service person to readjust the pilot if necessary.

® DIRECT-VENT FIREPLACE 8. 9. Remove the burner by loosening the two 5/16" hex mounting screws (see Figure 62). Lift burner up and out. Convert the pilot burner by changing out the pilot orifice. Remove the compression nut and compression sleeve from the pilot. Remove the pilot orifice from inside the pilot barrel (see Figure 63). Replace with the pilot orifice supplied with the fireplace. Note: The new pilot orifice has the number 30 stamped on it for identification purposes.
