NOTE:IftheTestbuttonispressedandheldduringtheSilencemode,thesmokealarmwillbe
testednormally.UponthereleaseoftheTestbutton,theSilencemodewillberestarted.
Before using the alarm Silence Feature, identify the source of smoke and be certain that
safe conditions exist.
Clean the smoke alarm at least once a monthtoremovedust,dirt,insectsordebris.Usinga
softbrushorwandattachmenttoavacuumcleaner,vacuumallsidesandcoverofsmokealarm.
Besurealltheventsarefreeofdebris.
Ifthesmokealarmisfalsealarmingandcannotberestoredtonormaloperation,thesmokealarm
shouldbereplaced.
BATTERY REPLACEMENT
Thesmokealarmusesa9Voltbattery.Thebatteryshouldlastforatleastoneyearundernormal
operatingconditions.Thesmokealarmhasalowbatteryindicator,anaudiblebeeporchirp.It
willoperateatapprox.40secondintervalsforaminimumof7days.Whenthisindicationoccurs,
replace the battery with anAlkaline type (Energizer #522, Duracell #MN1604) or Lithium type
(Ultralife U9VL-J) from your local retailer.
LITHIUM Battery Models only-TheLITHIUMbatteryiswarrantedtolastfor10yearsundernormal
operatingconditions.ReplacethebatterywithonlyLITHIUMtype:(ULTRALIFE:U9VL-J).
Removethebattery.Whileobservingpolarity,pushthereplacementbatteryintothebatterytray
until it is held securely in place.
Test the smoke alarm by pushing the TEST button onthe smoke alarm cover until the alarm
sounds, then release.
REPAIRS AND SERVICES
Thissmokealarmcontainslessthan1microcurie(37kilobecquerel)ofAmericium241,aradioactive
material. The distribution of these ionization-type smoke alarms is licensed by the U.S. Nuclear
Regulatory Commission; the consumer is exempt from any licensing or requirements. If the
smoke alarm is defective in any way, do not tamper with the smoke alarm. Return the smoke alarm
forservicing.(Seewarrantyforinstructionsorin-warrantyreturns.)Therewillbeaservicecharge
for repairing out of warranty smoke alarms.

o Makeaoorplanindicatingalldoorsandwindowsandatleasttwoescaperoutesfromeachroom.
Second story windows may need a rope or chain ladder.
o Haveafamilymeetinganddiscussyourescapeplan,showingeveryonewhattodoincaseofre.
o Determineaplaceoutsideyourhomewhereallofyoucanmeetifareoccurs.
o Familiarize everyone with the sound of the smoke alarm and train them to leave your home when
they hear the sound.
o Identifychildren'sbedroomswithredstickersplacedintheupperleftcornerofthewindows.They
areavailablefromyourlocalredepartment.
o Practicearedrillatleasteverysixmonths.Practiceallowsyoutotestyourplanbeforeanemergency.
Youmaynotbeabletoreachyourchildren.Itisimportanttheyknowwhattodo!
WHAT TO DO WHEN THE ALARM SOUNDS
o Leaveimmediatelybyyourplanofescape.Everysecondcounts,sodon'twastetimegettingdressed
orpickingupvaluables.
o Inleaving,don'topenanyinsidedoorwithoutrstfeelingitssurface.Ifhot,orifyouseesmoke
seeping through cracks, don't open that door!Instead,useyouralternateexit.Ifinsidedooris
cool,placeyourshoulderagainstit,openitslightlyandbereadytoslamitshutifheatandsmoke
rush in.
o Stayclosetotheoorifairissmoky.Breatheshallowlythroughacloth,wetifpossible.
o Once outside, go to your selected meeting place and make sure everyone is there.
o Calltheredepartmentfromyourneighbor'shome–not from yours!
o Don'treturntoyourhomeuntilreofcialssaythatitisallrighttodoso.
