TRANSPORTATION OF BATTERIES
All Universal Power Group sealed lead acid batteries are considered non-hazardous for
purposes of transportation by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT),
International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO 2007-2008 Edition), the International Air
Transportation Association (IATA 2007 Edition), and the International Maritime
Dangerous Goods regulations (IMDG 2006 Edition). To be considered non-hazardous,
they must pass the Vibration Test and Pressure Differential Test as required by the DOT
in 49 CFR 173.159 (d). Since the battery exceeds the requirements of Special
Provisions “A48” and “A67”, both ICAA and IATA consider them non-hazardous as
defined by the 2007 Handbooks of both organizations.
Because they pass the Vibration and Attitude performance tests described in the 2006
Edition of the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code, our batteries are
authorized for transportation on deck or in under deck storage on either passenger or
cargo vessels.
The only shipping requirements for these batteries are that they be shipped in a
condition that would protect them from short circuits and they are securely packaged so
to withstand conditions normal to transportation. For transportation by a consumer, in or
out of a device, they are unregulated thus no additional special handling or packaging is
necessary.
All of our lead acid batteries manufactured after September 30, 1995, and their outside
packaging, are labeled “NON- SPILLABLE” per 49 CFR 173.159 (d). If our batteries are
repackaged by a customer or become components of another product, the outer
package must be relabeled per 49 CFR 173.159 (d).
