Starting the engine
15
Never use start spray
WARNING! Never use start spray or similar prod-
ucts as a starting aid. Explosions could occur in
the inlet manifold. The consequence could be
personal injury.
Starting with auxiliary batteries
WARNING! Batteries (especially auxiliary batter-
ies) contain hydrogen which is highly explosive
in contact with air. A spark, which can be formed
if the auxiliary batteries are wrongly connected,
is enough to make a battery explode and cause
damage.
1. Check that the auxiliary batteries are connected
(series or parallel) so that the rated voltage corre-
sponds to the engine system voltage.
2. First connect the red (+) jumper cable to the auxil-
iary battery, then to the flat battery. Then connect
the black jumper cable (–) to the auxiliary battery,
and lastly to a place some distance from the flat
batteries, such as the negative cable by the main
switch or the negative cable connection on the
starter motor.
3. Start the engine.
WARNING! Do not move the connections when
you attempt to start the engine (risk of arcing),
and do not stand and lean over one of the batter-
ies.
4. Remove the jumper cables in the reverse order
from installation.
WARNING! The ordinary cables to the standard
batteries must not be loosened on any condition.
