2.4.3 Cleaning the Platen
To clean the 8500’s platen, complete the following steps:

To replace the 8500’s platen, complete the following steps:
14 Lower the printer’s cover, plug the AC power cord into a power source, and turn on power to
the printer.
15 Reload paper stock.
Note: It is recommended that the new print head be calibrated at this point. See “Calibrating the
8500’s Print Head” on page 36.
Step Action
1 Power off the unit. Unplug the unit’s AC power cable from the power source.
2 Open the printer’s cover by pressing the cover release button.
3 After the cover pops open, lift the cover to the full upright position.
4 Press the print head release latch downward to open the print head assembly.
5 Clean the platen surface using Bloch Buster, window cleaner, a damp cloth/paper towel, or
Fedron.
6 If the platen appears to be defective, replace the platen.
7 Lower the print head assembly, making sure to securely latch it back into position.
8 Lower the printer’s cover, plug the AC power cord into a power source, and turn on the power
to the printer.
9 Reload the paper stock.
