Serial Communications Accessories
Telebyte Opto-Isolation Modules - Limit Ground Currents in Copper Cabling
Opto-Isolation Modules solve the problems of ground currents by maintaining an optical connection between electrical data communication equipment.
These units have DB25M and DB25F connections and come in RS232 and RS422 versions depending on the serial interface utilized. Both devices are
powered directly by the serial connection so no external power is required. Products carry 1-year manufacturer’s warranty and have CE approval. Made
in U.S.A.
TB268 RS232 Opto-Isolation Module, DB25, Male / Female 106.00
TB281 RS422 Opto-Isolation Module, DB25, Male / Female 158.00
Telebyte Opto-Isolation Module PLUS Line Driver - Protection and Extends Distances
The TB282 is an Opto-Isolation Module PLUS an RS232 line driver AND a Surge Protection Device. Utilizes DB25M and DB25F connectors for RS232
interface. Maximum distances of 1000 feet can be maintained at 10.2 Kbps transfer rate, 64 Kbps achievable at shorter distances. Externally powered,
includes a 1-year manufacturer’s warranty. Made in U.S.A.

Telebyte RS232 Port Sharing Device - 1 DB25M to 3 DB25F
The TB31 Port Splitter is a passive device which attaches to a modem, printer or computer and allows up to three terminals, monitors or other input devices
such as bar code readers, mag stripe units and specialized key pads to be interconnected. Semiconductor circuits are utilized to provide isolation of the
prime signals in the RS232 interface. Each port has a switch associated with it for reversing Pins 2 and 3 of its respective RS232 connector. The signals
that are isolated include the selected Transmit Data Line and Pins 4 and 20. Each port features a Female connector. The main port consists of a DB25
(Male) connector for connection to a modem, printer or computer. Made in U.S.A.

Telebyte TB8381 RS422 DIN Rail Mounted Opto Isolator
The TB8381 is an RS422 DIN Rail mounted Opto Isolator which allows re-generating and extending the distance of RS422 networks while maintaining
optical isolation between the ports. The TB8381 supports RS422 links to a maximum length of 3,300 feet or 1 km at any data rate up to 115 Kbps. Full-
duplex transmission is accommodated on two twisted pairs. The TB8381 includes TD and RD LED's as well as a built-in power supply. The power input
is standard for 110 Volts/60 Hz. All the inputs and outputs are via screw terminals located on the top and side surfaces of the TB8381. A full complement
of dip switches is provided for pull up and pull down resistors on all received data lines as well as terminating loads for transmitters and receivers. The
user also has the ability to configure the grounding scheme for the four wire links.

Universal Modify and Test Set (UMATS) - The Ultimate Tool for the Datacom Specialist
The UMATS brings all V.35, RS232, V.24 RS449/RS422, RS530, RS530A and V.11 specified interface signals to the switch and jump area. This hand held,
battery or AC powered unit will support most current interface standards. Furthermore, a bank of built-in level shifters allow for conversion from one
interface to another; V.35 can be converted to RS232, RS422 to RS232, or RS530 to V.35, etc. Each level shifter is also connected to a Tri-State LED
to provide monitoring of four balanced signals and four unbalanced signals. The UMATS is a perfect way to:
• Test the design of expensive cables before they are implemented.
• Troubleshoot V.35, RS449/RS422, X.21, RS530, RS530A, RS232, V.24, V.11, etc. cables and interfaces.
• Convert one interface to another allowing for use of an RS232 data scope with a RS530 interface, or V.35 data
scope with an RS449 interface, etc.
• Temporarily bridge the communication link between two devices in a null modem configuration.
• All major signals are switched and have double termination to eliminate the need for daisy chain jumpers.
• Each set includes 30 point to point jumpers, a wallmount transformer, rugged protection case, instruction cards and a
DB37, DB25, V.35 extension cable set.
• V.35 Interface - Connector: two DTE/DCE 34-M female. RS449/RS422 - V.11 - X.21 interface. Connector: two DTE/DCE DB37-S
female RS530-RS232 - V.24 interface. Connector: two DTE/DCE DB25-S female.

Ground currents or loops are caused when two or more electrical devices are tied together via copper cabling and the equipment has different ground
potentials. This combination can cause difficulty in data transmission, can damage equipment and in extreme cases cause bodily harm in medical applications.
The simplest way to protect ground currents is to tie all the equipment in question to a common ground (preferably earth ground). In many applications this
is not physically possible due to the distance between equipment. The next simplest way to solve this problem is by installing an optical link in between the
copper cabling connecting the equipment. This can be done with an Opto-Isolation Module which converts the electrical data signals to light then back to
electrical signals. The last way to solve the problem is to not use copper cabling at all, but to use fiber optic connections between equipment. The biggest
advantage here is that the ground current problem is solved and operating distance can be greatly increased.
