After this the GoldTrap-syringe assembly is carefully removed from the beaker with nitric acid
and the open end of the plastic tube is immersed in a beaker with filled with water. The water is
pulled into the syringe thus rinsing the GoldTrap and removing the nitric acid. After that the
GoldTrap-syringe assembly is removed from the water filled beaker and placed over a sink or a
suitable container which shall hold the purge water (= acidic water). By pressing the piston of the
syringe the rinse water is released from the GoldTrap. This rinsing step is repeated at least five
times in order to remove any salts or acids. Then the GoldTrap is disconnected from the syringe
and all tubing is removed. It has to be dried with a flow of nitrogen or clean air before it is
installed into the instrument again.
CAUTION: the acid used for cleaning must only be in contact with the interior of the thin
ceramic tube in the center line of the GoldTrap and must never get into contact with the
cylindrical aluminium part or with the coil inside the aluminium cylinder or with the
connection cables and plug. This will damage the GoldTrap within a short time!
