CARE AND MAINTENANCE
GENERAL: ThesuggestionsandrecommendationsbelowshouldbefollowedtoachievesatisfactoryperformanceofanyCPProduct.Failuretocomplymayresultinareduced
usefullifeoftheProductandvoidtheProductwarranty.
INSPECTION: TheProductshouldbeinspectedperiodicallyinaccordancewiththefollowingmaintenanceitems:(i)re-naillooseProduct;(ii)trimtreesandbushes
thatareincontactwiththeProduct;(iii)replacecaulkingthathashardened,crackedand/orlostitsseal;(iv)correctgradedrainagewhereretainedwaterisincontact
withtheProduct;(v)eliminateoversprayfromlawnandlandscapingsprinklers;(vi)checktheconditionofCoatingassetforthbelow;(vii)followanyapplicablepaint
manufacturer’srepaintingrecommendations;and(viii)maintainguttersanddownspouts.(SeeCPInstructions’“KeyHomeownerMaintenanceResponsibilities”.)
REFINISHING: Exteriorwallfinishesweathermostrapidlyonthoseportionsofthebuildingthatreceivethegreatestexposuretosunandmoisture.Areasreceiving
maximumexposuremayrequirerefinishingasoftenasevery3years.Thefrequencyofrefinishwilldependongeographiclocations;thetype,qualityandcolorofthe
paint;andonotherfactorssuchasthemethodofpaintapplicationandthenumberofcoats.Repaintingisdictatedbythedegreeofwearorerosionoftheoldpaint.
RefinishingistypicallyrequirediftheProductisdiscoloredandblotchy;iftheCoatingiscracked,peelingorscaling;oriftheCoatingappearsthin,porousandchalked
toapointwhereitnolongerprotectsorhidesthesurface.Severepaintcracking,flakingorpeelingisnotnormalpaintweathering.Suchproblemsmaybecausedby
inferiorpaints,incompatiblepaints,improperpaintingproceduresorbyimproperconstructionthatpermitswaterorwatervaportoreach,condense,orfreezeontheback
sideoftheProduct.(SeeCPInstructions’“Painting”.)
Frequentrepainting canresult inexcessive totalpaint filmthickness, whichmay causeproblems suchas crackingand pooling.On theother hand,unreasonable
delaysinmaintenancerepaintingmaycontributetodeteriorationofboththepaintandProductsuchthatrefinishingcannotbeaccomplishedeffectively.Ingeneral,it
isrecommendedthatthetotalCoatingfilmthicknessbemaintainedat4drymils.Thistypicallyisconsideredtheequivalentofthreecoatsoffinish(onecoatofprimer
plustwocoatsoffinishpaint).
SURFACE PREPARATION: Theextentofsurfacepreparationisdependentontheconditionoftheoldfinish.Loosepaintmaterialshouldberemoved.Thesurface
shouldbewashedandallmildewmustberemovedbeforepainting.Useofapowerwasherisnotrecommended.(SeeCPInstructions’“KeyHomeownerMaintenance
Responsibilities”and“Painting”.)
REPRIMING: Iftheoldsurfaceissound(nopeeling,cracking,heavycaulking,etc.),reprimingistypicallynotnecessaryunlessitisrecommendedbythepaint
manufacturerforthetopcoatchosen.IftheProduct’sbasesubstrateand/oriftheoldprimerisexposed,theseareasshouldbereprimed.IftheProduct’sedgesor
endsshowanycracksorfissures,theseshouldberesealedwithaprimer.(Onlypremiumexterioroil/alkydtypeprimersarerecommended.)Theprimerusedmustbe
compatiblewiththechosentopcoatandtheprimermanufacturerrecommendationsfollowedinallrespects.(SeeCPInstructions’“Painting”.)
SELECTING AND APPLYING FINISH COAT PAINTS/STAINS: Theserecommendationsdealwithrefinishoverfield-appliedfinishcoats.Apremiumpaint
thatissuitableforuseonhardboardsidingmustbeused.Thefinishchosenshouldbecompatiblewiththeexistingoldfinish.Onlypremiumexterioracryliclatexpaintsare
recommendedwhenfinishisappliedtotexturedproducts.Satinorglossoil/alkydpaintsarealsoacceptable,asareopaqueacryliclatexstains.Thefollowingfinishcoats
(paints/stains)arenotrecommended:shakeandshinglepaints,flatalkydoil-basedpaintsandstains,vinylacetate(PVA),vinyl/acrylicorvinyl/acetate/acryliccopolymer
paintsandstains,semi-transparentstains,clearcoatings.Thefinishcoatofpaintorstainshouldbeappliedinstrictaccordancewiththerecommendationsofthepaint
manufacturer.(SeeCPInstructions’“Painting”. )Exception:forsmoothTruWoodproducts,useonlypremiumalkydoil-basedpaint.
MILDEW: Mildew,moldandotherfungusgrowthsmustberemovedfromtheProductparticularlybeforerepaintingtheProduct.Thismaybeaccomplishedby
scrubbingtheinfectedsurfacethoroughlywithmildewremovalproductsorthefollowingsolution:
• 2/3cupTSP(trisodiumphosphate)–availableinpaintorhardwarestores
• 1/3cupdetergentcontainingnoammonia(Tideortheequivalent)
• 1quart5%sodiumhypochlorite(Cloroxortheequivalent)
• 3quartswarmwaterorenoughtomakeonegallon
Protectivehandandeyewearmustbewornwhenapplyinganyremovalproductorthesolution.TheProductshouldbescrubbedwithasoftbrushandthenrinsed
thoroughlywithfreshwater.Donotplaceorsplashthesolutiononlandscaping.PromptlyaftertheProducthasbeencleanedandhasdried,amildewresistantpaint
shouldbeapplied.
