2. Industry practice suggests a 4”-5” layer of paver base such
as Nurserymen’s Preferred Paver Base be evenly spread and
compacted over the level prepared soil surface.
3. Next lay 1-2” of Nurserymen’s Preferred Leveling Sand or a
course bedding sand (ASTM C33) on top of the paver base
material and screed in place. Pavers are then placed on top
of this product. Do not use Weed-Blocker for the base or
leveling material.
4. It may be helpful to use a plate compactor to even out the
bedding sand. Use a rigid divider between locking masonry
units and softer border areas like grass.
5. Weed-Blocker Paver Locking Sand will perform best when
there is a joint gap of approximately ¼” between masonry
units. Paver Locking Sand should fill the joint gap freely from
top of grade to base of paver. Joints that are too narrow will
not allow joint sand to fill gaps.
Note: It is the responsibility of the installer/applicator to ensure
the suitability of the product for its intended use.
Application
Filling Joints:
• Weather conditions must be dry and no rain in forecast for at
least 12 hours after application.
• Temperature must be above 50°F (10°C) and surfaces must
be completely dry. No moisture should be present on the
surface prior to applying Paver Locking Sand. Any moisture
could lead to early activation and staining of the surface.
• Cover surface of the project with Weed-Blocker Paver
Locking Sand. Using a push broom, sweep Paver Locking
Sand into the joints to fill them completely. Best results are
obtained when sweeping areas up to 200 sq. ft. at a time.
Sweeping across too large of a surface can separate the
large and fine sand particles and the large will drop in while
the fine get swept across. When using a broom to spread the
sand, apply it in two different directions perpendicular to each
other. This will allow a better penetration of sand into cavities.
Compact the surface where necessary. For a pavement
project, it may be advisable, though not required, to use a
plate compactor to even out the application. Ensure the
surface is swept clean of Paver Locking Sand to avoid
staining during compacting.
• Stone, concrete or paver surface MUST BE COMPLETELY
FREE from Weed-Blocker before adding moisture to avoid
adhesion of Weed-Blocker to the surface. Pavers and bricks
will vary in their surface texture and porosity, clay bricks can
be particularly textured and it can be difficult to be certain all
the fine particles have been cleaned off the surface. Any
residue or dust left on the surface can adhere causing
surface discoloration. It may be helpful to use a leaf blower
on low setting to clean the paver surface.
Wetting Joints:
The wetting process is an important step, MIST with water to
saturate the sand, but not float the polymers out of the sand.
Wet for full depth, not just the surface. Once wet, the polymer
will not re-set with more moisture.
• Using a garden hose or low-pressure spray equipment,
evenly moisten the joints with a light spray in three
applications at 10-minute intervals. These additional wettings
are required in order to gradually soak the joints to their full
depth.
• Do not over spray or flood the surface of your application as
this could wash the Paver Locking Sand out of the joints. Too
much initial water will cause the polymer to run off and

3. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Nurserymen’s Preferred Weed-Blocker Paver Locking Sand is
a specially formulated polymer modified joint sand for use with
pavement systems utilizing segmental concrete pavers, clay
pavers or natural stone; concrete slab joint applications or
filling gaps between segmental retaining wall blocks. The
polymer in Paver Locking Sand becomes activated when
combined with water to hold the sand in place by binding
together the individual sand particles to set firm while remain-
ing flexible and allowing for movement in the pavement sys-
tem. Paver Locking Sand restricts and resists growth of
weeds, insect infestation and sand erosion due to rain, wind
and frost. Weed-Blocker Paver Locking Sand is used with
Paver Base, and Paver Leveling Sand in a paver installation
system.
Typical polymeric joint sand is made using ASTM C144 sand
and a special type of polymer which can be used on all types
of masonry units made in accordance with ASTM C902
“Standard Specification for Pedestrian and Light Traffic Paving
Brick” and ASTM C936 “Standard Specification for Solid
Interlocking Concrete Paving Units.”
Features and Benefits
• Can be used with all types of masonry paver units
• Restricts growth of weeds
• Assists in proper drainage and stability for paver installations
• Restricts insect infestations
When/Where to Use
• Exterior locations
• Segmental concrete pavers, clay pavers or natural stone
• Concrete slab joint applications
• Filling gaps between segmental retaining wall blocks
