In a 6 month mouse skin cancer initiation-promotion study, undiluted creosote or a 1% or 50% creosote
suspension was applied daily for two weeks followed by six months of twice-weekly
applications. Creosote was tested as a tumor initiator with TPA as a promotor, as a promoter with DMBA
as an initiator, and as both an initiator and a promoter. Repeated applications of creosote produced skin
irritation and acted as an initiator, a promoter and a complete carcinogen.
