FOUR HAMMER POSITIONS:
There are four possible positions for the hammer of this single action revolver:
1. Fully forward (at rest);
2. Quarter cock (safe);
3. Half cock (loading), and;
4. Full cock (re).
Fully forward (at rest) position: When the hammer has not been moved into one
of the three possible cocked positions, it is in the fully forward (at rest) position. In
this position, the front of the hammer is resting against the frame and the ring pin
would be resting on the primer of a chambered cartridge. (WARNING: NEVER leave
the hammer fully forward over a live cartridge. In this position, a sharp blow to the
hammer – or a dropped revolver – can cause an accidental discharge and SERIOUS
INJURY OR DEATH could occur.) (Fig. B/1 - C1)
Quarter cock (safe) position: When the hammer is moved rearward into the
rst position, it is in the quarter cock (safe) position. All models of 1873 Cattleman
revolver have this quarter cock position machined into the hammer. In this position,
the top front edge of the hammer rests slightly (approx. 1/4”) away from the frame.
(WARNING: The user must manually move the hammer into this quarter cock (safe)
position – NOTICE: This revolver does not have an “automatic” safety; therefore, the
safety is not always on and must be engaged by user.) (Fig. A-B-C)
Half cock (loading) position: When the hammer is moved rearward to the next
position (you can feel and hear a “click” when it reaches this position), it is in the half
cock (loading) position. In this position, the cylinder is disengaged and can be rotated
freely in a clockwise direction toward the loading gate. When the loading gate is open,
this free movement allows the user to rotate the cylinder and see each chamber to be
loaded or unloaded. (WARNING: Do not carry this rearm with the hammer in the half
cock (loading) position – it will re if dropped.) (Fig. D)
Full cock (fire) position: When the hammer is moved all the way to the rearward-
most position (make sure you feel and hear the hammer “click” into this position), it
is in the full cock (re) position. In this position, the hammer is fully cocked and the
revolver is ready to re when the trigger is pulled. (NOTICE: Never attempt to re this
revolver from any hammer position except the full cock (re) position, as attempting
to do so will strain the internal mechanisms causing damage or breakage.) (Fig. E)
