User guide

There is no software to install to use IPMI with these motherboards. It is all provided through a web
interface. Refer to the AST2050 manual for complete instructions on how to use this interface.
Simply point your web browser to the IP address of the BMC of the motherboard you want to monitor.
2: How do I find the IP address of the BMC?
The BMC will display its IP address during POST. You will need to know the IP to access the BMC
through another computer on the network. There must either be a static IP address set through UH8
or DHCP must be enabled and the NIC must be plugged into a switch for the BMC to have a valid IP.
Otherwise it will show as 000.000.000.000.
3. Can I access the BMC on the local machine?
The BMC shares a NIC port with the motherboard instead of having a dedicated NIC. The local
machine can’t use this shared NIC to communicate with the BMC. The only way for the local machine
to log into its own BMC to monitor its own temperature sensors for example is for the board to have two
Ethernet cables. The local machine will use the second NIC to communicate with the BMC through
an Ethernet switch or router to the primary NIC that is attached to the BMC.

- IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface) - IPMI is a Management specification used by Intel
for remote management of systems. Below are a couple links that help explain what IPMI is all about.

- BMC (Baseboard Management Controller) – The BMC is the actual chipset that is used for the IPMI
implementation. Below is a link to help further explain what BMC chipsets are and how they function:

TYAN uses various brands/types of BMC chipsets for our SMDC and embedded IPMI solutions. Each
chipset brings with it their own unique set of capabilities that must be integrated into the overall IPMI
solution. Simply put, without the BMC chipset, there would be no IPMI ability.
