Creating An Earth Ground
1. Tocreateasolid,lowresistance,earthground,drivea1/2in(12mm)orgreaterdiametercoppercladground
rodatleast6-8ft(1.8-2.4m)intotheearthsothattherodcontactsmoistsoilovermostofitslength.Depend-
ingonlocation,agreaterdepthmayberequiredtoobtainalowresistanceground(seeNOTE).Groundrods,
typically10ft(3.0m)long,maybeweldedendtoendforgreaterlengths.Locatetherodascloseaspossible
totheworktable.Installagroundwire,1/0AWG(European50mm2)orgreater,betweenthegroundrodand
the star ground point on the cutting table.
NOTE
Ideally, a properly installed ground rod will have a resistance of three ohms or less.
Totestforaproperearthground,refertothefollowingdiagram.Ideally,thereadingonthemultimetershouldbe
asshown.
CAUTION
No other connections should be made at the ground rod being tested.
Thistestassumesthe115or230VACsourceneutralisconnectedtotheutilityearthground.

1VAC = 1 ohm
On 230V AC Line:
1.5VAC = 3 ohms
0.5VAC = 1 ohm

2. Increasingthegroundrodlengthbeyond20-30ft(6.1–9.1m)doesnotgenerallyincreasetheeffectiveness
ofthegroundrod.Alargerdiameterrodwhichhasmoresurfaceareamayhelp.Sometimeskeepingthesoil
aroundthegroundrodmoistbycontinuouslyrunningasmallamountofwaterintoitwillwork.Addingsalttothe
soilbysoakingitinsaltwatermayalsoreduceitsresistance.Youmayalsotryachemicalgroundroddevise.
Whenthesemethodsareused,periodiccheckingofthegroundresistanceisrequiredtomakesuretheground
is still good.
D. Routing Of Torch Leads
1. TominimizeRFinterference,positiontorchleadsasfaraspossiblefromanyCNCcomponents,drivemotors,
controlcables,orprimarypowerlines.Ifcableshavetopassovertorchleads,dosoatanangle.Donotrun
theplasmacontrolorothercontrolcablesinparallelwiththetorchleadsinpowertracts.
2. Keeptorchleadsclean.Dirtandmetalparticlesbleedoffenergy,whichcausesdifcultstartingandincreased
chanceofRFinterference.
