Specific Hazards Arising from the Chemical
Will be easily ignited by heat, sparks or flames. Will form explosive
mixtures with air. Vapors from liquefied gas are initially heavier than
air and spread along ground. Vapors may travel to source of ignition
and flash back. Ruptured cylinders may rocket.
Protective Equipment and Precautions for Firefighters
Move containers from fire area if you can do it without risk. As in any fire, wear self-contained breathing apparatus pressure-demand,
MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent) and full protective gear.
6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
Personal Precautions
ELIMINATE all ignition sources (no smoking, flares, sparks or flames in immediate area). All
equipment used when handling the product must be grounded. Do not attempt to stop leak,
due to danger of explosion Pay attention to flashback. Use personal protective equipment.
Ensure adequate ventilation. Keep people away from and upwind of spill/leak. Contents under
pressure.
Environmental Precautions
Use water spray to reduce vapors or divert vapor cloud drift. Avoid allowing water runoff to
contact spilled material. Prevent spreading of vapors through sewers, ventilation systems and
confined areas.
Methods for Containment
If possible, turn leaking containers so that gas escapes rather than liquid. Isolate area until gas
has dispersed.
Methods for Cleaning Up
Do not direct water at spill or source of leak. Soak up with inert absorbent material (e.g. sand,
silica gel, acid binder, universal binder, sawdust). Pick up and transfer to properly labeled
containers.
7. HANDLING AND STORAGE
Handling
Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Avoid contact with
eyes. Avoid breathing vapors or mists. Keep away from open flames, hot surfaces and sources
of ignition. Contents under pressure. Do not puncture or incinerate cans.
Storage
Keep containers tightly closed in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place. Keep out of the reach of
children. Keep in properly labeled containers. Keep in an area equipped with sprinklers.
