MOWER BLADES
Mowerbladesaresharp.
• When working near blades, wear
heavyleatherglovesorwrap bladesin
thick rags to protectyourselffrom the
sharpedges.
• Wear eye protectionwhensharpening
blades.
Examinemowerbladesbeforeoperation.
Forefficient mowing, cutting edgesof
bladesshould alwaysbekept sharp.
Checkfor bladewear or damage. See
Figure5-16. Replacea severelyworn or
damagedbladewith a newone.
To InspectBlades:
1. Stopengine,wait forall partsto
stopmoving,anddisconnectspark
plugwire.
2. Tipmoweron rearwheelsby follow-
ing instructions "Tipping Mower For
Service"in this Sectionof Manual.
To RemoveBlades:
Removebolt (Figure5-18) and
washer(s). Removemowerblade.
To SharpenBlades:
Grindor file thesameamountfrom each
bladeendto maintainbladebalance. An
unbalancedmowerbladeproducesex-
cessivevibrationand maydamagespin-
dle bearings.Sharpencutting edge
straight across,parallelto rearedgeof
mower blade.SeeFigure5-16. After
sharpening,bladebalancemust be
checked.

ENINGSERVICESORYOURAUTHO-
RIZEDDEALERAREEQUIPPEDTO
SHARPENMOWERBLADESSAFELY.
To Install Blades:
Bladesmust beinstalledperpendicular
to each other (seeFigure5-17).
Install mowerbladeasshown in Figure
5-18 with flat side down. Install washer
on bolt. Tightenboltsto a torque value
of 35 ft. Ibs. (47 Nm).
NOTE: If top bolt is removed,reinstall
using LOCTITE#242 threadsealant.
