SAW CHAIN MAINTENANCE:
CAUTION
Make sure chainsaw engine is off. Disconnect spark plug wire before
sharpening. Follow proper sharpening procedures. Improper maintenance and
sharpening of saw chain will greatly increase danger of kickback.
WARNING
Dull saw chains are dangerous. The safest chain is a sharp chain. The sharpest
chain is a new chain. As the chain ages and wears, replace or maintain the
chain to ensure it is sharp.
NOTE: Touch up sharpening may be required once or twice a day. In areas where sand or other
abrasives have become embedded in tree bark, cutter teeth may dull more rapidly, requiring
more frequent sharpening.
NOTE: If a vise is not available to hold the guide bar for chain filing, a satisfactory job can be
done using the chain brake to hold the chain in position. Make sure chain is tensioned to prevent
wobbling. Push brake lever forward to engage chain brake.
FOR PROPER FILING OF CHAIN, USE FILES AND GUIDE AS SPECIFIED IN
FIGURE 7:
Use the correct size guide and file for your saw chain (Figure 7). Press file guide so it rides on both
cutter top plate and depth gauge, with guide marks in line with the length of chain. Be sure file is
tight in file guide groove (Figure 8). Always use file with handle attached.
CHAIN SHARPENING WITH FILE GUIDE:
1. File all cutters on one side.
2. Move to other side of chain and file all cutters opposite to complete sharpening. File all
cutters identically (Figure 9).
3. After sharpening cutters, check depth gauge height:
a. Place depth guide tool over chain, near midpoint of guide bar, so that the chain’s
depth gauge extends through slot.
b. If the cutter’s depth gauge extends above the slot in the depth gauge, file the
cutter’s depth gauge down until it is level with depth gauge tool. Make sure to
keep the round profile on the front of the cutters depth gauge (Figure 12).
CHAIN SHARPENING WITHOUT FILE GUIDE:
1. Using correct size round file: Apply pressure horizontally into cutter, filing in direction of
arrow (G) (Figure 10).
2. Once cutter has been filed, the leading edge when viewed from the side should hook
slightly forward (H) (Figure 11).
3. The cutting edge at the outermost tip of the top plate should be slanted at 60°. The chain
will cut best when all cutters are filed to the same length (J) (Figure 11).
4. Lower the depth gauges with a flat file (K) (Figure 11). Some expected filing of the rear
guard link tang for cutter types S will eventually occur (L) (Figure 11).
WARNING
Do not alter guard link tangs (L) except when filing depth gauges (Figure 11).
Do not hook cutter more than recommended (H), and do not exceed gauge
clearance (K). Any deviation from these recommendations greatly increases the
chance of kickback. Improper sharpening of this chain and/or the filing down
of the guard link tangs will increase the risk of severe injury due to kickback.
