5700/5800 GPS Receiver User Guide 57
General Operation 3
5700 Operation
The two internal batteries take approximately eight hours to charge.
They are charged individually, so each individual battery takes
approximately 4 hours to charge. The internal batteries start charging
whenever an external power supply of greater than 15 V is detected.
Each 5700 receiver in your system is supplied with two internal
lithium-ion battery packs. To charge both sets of batteries, connect
both receivers to power supplies as shown in Figure 3.2.
3.9 Battery charging and storage
Note – All battery types will tend to discharge over time when they are
not being used. Batteries will also discharge faster in colder
temperatures. Any Lithium-Ion battery that is intended to be stored for
long periods of time should be fully charged prior to storage and re-
charged periodically, minimum of every 3 months.
The 5700 system is designed to switch batteries or cease drawing
power when the battery pack discharges to a certain voltage. This
"cutoff" voltage protects the battery from deep discharge. The cutoff
value is 5.9 volts, with the deep discharge voltage being 5 volts or less.
A battery that has reached the deep discharge level cannot be
recovered by 5700 internal charger or the Trimble external charger and
will have to be replaced. The following recommendations will provide
optimal performance and extend the life of your batteries.
1. Fully charge all new batteries prior to use.
2. Do not allow the batteries to discharge below 5 volts.
3. Keep all batteries on continuous charge when not in use. Batteries
may be kept on charge indefinitely without damage to the receiver or
batteries.
4. Batteries should not be stored in the receiver or external charger
unless power is applied.
5. If you must store the batteries, charge fully prior to storage and
periodically recharge all units in storage.
