T R I nIs t al- l i nTg t hRe C oOl l a rNS t r Ia p C S INSTALLING THE COLLAR STRAP Your Remote Trainer is shipped with the receiver separate from the collar strap. Install the strap as shown in the illustrations. On multi-dog units, be sure to install the correct color strap on each receiver. Use the colored strap that matches the colored dot on the receiver. Slide the correct color strap through one side of the receiver, then through the other side.
T R I nIs t al- l i nTg t hRe C oOl l a rNS t r Ia p C S You can easily adjust the strap for different sized necks by sliding the receiver along the strap. If the strap is too long for your dog, you can cut off excess length. Leave enough length to go through the D-ring (see “Fitting the Collar on the Dog” page 13). You may also use any collar strap that fits the receiver.
T SRe l e cI ti n-g CTo n tR act O P oi nN t L eIn g tC h S SELECTING CONTACT POINT LENGTH (Does Not Apply to Classic 70) Your Remote Trainer comes with two sets of contact points – long and short. The shorter points are installed in the unit at the factory and are suitable for most coat lengths. For dogs with especially long hair or thick undercoats, the long contact points will give the best possible contact. To change the contact points, always use the small wrench supplied with your Remote Trainer.
TI n sRt a l lIi n g- t h T Oi t t eNr A nI t e C e TrR ansm n n aS INSTALLING THE TRANSMITTER ANTENNA Screw the transmitter antenna into the top of the transmitter. Hold the antenna near the base and tighten by hand. Do not over-tighten. Hold the antenna near its base and tighten by hand.
Tr nR Tu i n g tIh e- R eT m o tR e TrO ai n eN r O nI a nCd OSf f TURNING THE REMOTE TRAINER ON AND OFF The Remote Trainer consists of a hand-held transmitter and a radio receiver on the dog’s collar. The collar must be turned on before it can receive signals from the transmitter. Between training sessions, you should turn the collar off to save battery life. To turn the Remote Trainer collar on, set the transmitter intensity knob to the number 0 (zero).
Tr nR N O nI a nCd OSf f Tu i n g tIh e- R eT m o tR e TrO a i n er To turn the collar off, repeat this process. The collar light will make one long red flash to indicate that the collar is now turned off. After turning on the collar, it is a good idea to move the intensity knob to a number other than 0 (zero) so you don't accidentally turn the collar off when correcting the dog for the first time.
T RF it tIi n g- t hT e C oR l l a rOo n N t h e ID ogC S FITTING THE COLLAR ON THE DOG Place the collar strap in the middle of the dog’s neck. The receiver should be on the underside of his neck. Place the receiver so the light is facing forward (towards the dog’s nose). Tighten the buckle by holding it with two fingers as you pull the strap snug. Do not put any fingers under the strap as you tighten it. Make it snug, Remote Trainers need to be snug to work properly.
T RF i t tIi n g- t hT e C oR l l a rOo n N t h e ID ogC S You can easily adjust the strap for different sized necks by sliding the receiver along the strap. If the collar strap is too long for your dog, you can cut off excess strap length. Leave enough length to go through the D-ring with about 3 inches to spare. Please note that Remote Trainers are not designed to be worn continuously by a dog.
T R IS e -t t i nTg t hRe I nOt e n N si t y I C S SETTING THE INTENSITY Your Remote Trainer can give corrections at different intensity levels, so you can match the level of correction to both the training situation and your dog’s temperament. There are two ways to adjust intensity level while training. One way is to use the intensity knob on the top of the transmitter, as explained in this section. All Tri-Tronics Remote Trainers give you this method of adjusting stimulation intensity.
T UR s i n gI t h- e STt i mRu l aO t i o nNB u It t oC ns S USING THE STIMULATION BUTTONS Tri-Tronics Remote Trainers offer two types of stimulation, “continuous” and “momentary” (Classic 70 and Trashbreaker UltraXL offer only continuous stimulation). Continuous Stimulation The timing of continuous stimulation is controlled by the trainer. Continuous stimulation stays on while the transmitter button is pressed, up to the “time out” period, described below.
T UR s in gI t h- e STt i mRu l aO t i o nNB u It t oC ns S Please see the chart below for the features of your model.
T R U s i In g -t h eT ToR ne O and N B e eIp e rC S USING THE TONE (Does not apply to the BeaglerXL, Flyway SpecialXL, or the Upland Special XL.) Some Remote Trainer models can make an audible tone coming from the collar. The chart on pages 4 and 5 shows which Remote Trainer models include this feature. The meaning of the tone is determined by your dog’s training. It can mean a particular command, a warning, praise, etc.
T R IRange - T R Signal O NIssues I C• FCC S Expected • Radio EXPECTED RANGE Your Remote Trainer has a range of one mile (two miles on the Trashbreaker Ultra XL). Terrain, weather, vegetation, transmission from other radio devices in the area, and other factors affect range. RADIO SIGNAL ISSUES Modern microprocessor technology virtually eliminates the possibility that your collar could be unintentionally set off by someone else with a Tri-Tronics product.
T R I M-u l tTi - D R Oo d N og M els I C S MULTI-DOG MODELS On two- and three-dog models, the toggle switch next to the transmitter buttons selects one collar to be “active.” The active collar is the one that will apply stimulation, make the tone, or operate the Beeper when the appropriate transmitter buttons are pressed. The colored spot next to the transmitter toggle switch indicates which collar will be active. The chart on pages 4 and 5 shows the strap colors for the multi-dog models.
T R I B- at T t e r y RC h aO r g i nN g I C S BATTERY CHARGING When to Recharge When the light on either the collar or transmitter blinks rapidly, you need to recharge it soon. The amount of time that batteries have left after the low battery indicator comes on depends on how heavily you use your Remote Trainer during training, the temperature (less time remains during cold weather), and other factors.
T R I B- a t T t er y RC h aO r g i nN g I C S Reinstall the protection caps on the collar and transmitter jacks to keep dirt, debris, and water out of the charging jacks. Be sure you seat the collar jack cover down firmly so that it is level with the surface of the collar, as shown in the illustration. Keeping the charging jacks clean and dry ensures that your chargers make good contact. If the collar charging jack becomes dirty, clean it as described in the section, “Care and Cleaning” (page 24).
T R I B- at T t e r y RC h aO r g i nN g I C S To get maximum life from your collar batteries, we recommend that you don't charge for more than 20 hours at a time. Occasionally exceeding the 20 hour limit will not harm the functioning of your batteries. However, this product is not intended to be left on a charger indefinitely. Storing a Remote Trainer Before storing your Remote Trainer for an extended period, charge it for 14 hours.
T R I C a- r e Ta n dR C l O e a n iN ng I C S CARE AND CLEANING A little care can extend the life of your Remote Trainer and reduce service costs. Charging Jacks Keep the protection caps secured over the charging jacks on the transmitter and collar. If the collar charging jack becomes dirty, flush thoroughly with clean tap water. If debris still remains, you can use the point of a toothpick to loosen remaining debris. Be careful not to bend the contacts inside the jack.

T R I -P r oTd u cRt S aOf e t N y I C S PRODUCT SAFETY Important: Your dog should be able to wear the collar comfortably for several hours at a time. The collar is not designed, however, to be worn continuously. To prevent irritation caused by rubbing, remove the collar for at least eight hours out of every 24 hour period. Also, remote training collars are designed to be worn snug, and a collar that is worn too loose can contribute to skin irritation.
T R I -P r oTd u cRt S aOf e t N y I C S Tri-Tronics Remote Trainers have the added safety feature of level 0 (zero) on the transmitter. At times when your transmitter might be accidentally bumped against objects during use, you can leave the intensity dial turned to 0 (zero) to prevent any possibility of an unwanted stimulation. Please note: Even though Tri-Tronics products are safe, they are intended for use only in the training of healthy dogs.
