1.2 Network Topology
EnRoute500s can be used to create two network topologies: a stand-alone network or an
Internet extension network that attaches to a network with connectivity to the Internet.

An Internet extension network (shown in Figure 2) is typically used when the goal is to provide
Internet access to a number of clients that connect to the mesh network. Alternatively, this
configuration can be used to provide access for client devices to remote resources on a private
network. The key feature to note is that there is at least one gateway node that provides
access from the mesh network to an external network.

In a stand-alone network, as shown in Figure 3, all nodes are configured to operate in the
same mode. This network configuration is suitable for applications where the clients using the
mesh only need to communicate with each other and do not need to access the Internet or
other remote network resources that are not directly connected to the mesh.
