Set the Fiber Duplex Jumper (Fiber Port 2)
CAUTION: Wear a grounding device and observe electrostatic discharge
precautions when setting the jumper. Failure to observe this caution could
result in damage to, and subsequent failure of, the media converter.
The jumper (located on the media converter circuit board) sets the full-
duplex/half-duplex mode for fiber port 2 (F2).
Full-Duplex The cable distances for fiber port 2 (F2)
are constrained by the cable
requirements (see pages 1 and 2).
Half-Duplex The cable distances for fiber port 2 (F2)
are constrained by the 512-Bit Rule
(see page 9).
To set the fiber duplex jumper:
1. Using a small screwdriver, remove the four (4) screws that secure the
cover and carefully remove the cover from the media converter.
2. Locate the two-position jumper on the circuit board.
3. Using small needle-nosed pliers or similar device, move the jumper to
the desired position. (Refer to the above drawing.)
4. Carefully replace the cover on the media converter and replace the four
(4) screws that secure the cover to the media converter.

If half-duplex mode is used, refer to the 512-Bit Rule (see page 9).
If full-duplex mode is used, the 512-Bit Rule does not apply. The cable
lengths are constrained by the cable requirements (see pages 1 and 2).
Connect the Fiber Cable
1. Locate or build IEEE 803.2™ compliant 100Base-FX fiber cable with
male, two-stranded TX to RX connectors installed at both ends.
2. Connect the fiber cables to the SBFTF10xx-14x media converter as
described:
Connect the male TX cable connector to the female TX port.
Connect the male RX cable connector to the female RX port.
3. Connect the fiber cables to the other device (another media converter,
hub, etc.) as described:
Connect the male TX cable connector to the female RX port.
Connect the male RX cable connector to the female TX port.
Connect the Twisted-Pair Copper Cable
Ensure that the correct cable type is installed to support the highest speed and
mode of operation to be selected.
1. Locate or build IEEE 803.2™ compliant 10Base-T or 100Base-TX cables,
with straight-through RJ-45 cable, and with straight-through RJ-45
connectors installed at both ends.
2. Connect the RJ-45 connector at one end of the cable to the RJ-45 port on
the SBFTF10xx-14x media converter.
3. Connect the RJ-45 connector at the other end of the cable to the RJ-45
port on the other device (switch, workstation, etc.).
