2.1 Troubleshooting
Chapter 2 describes how to determine which Field Replaceable Unit (FRU) in the
computer is causing the computer to malfunction. (The “FRU” means the replaceable unit
in the field.) The FRUs covered are:
1. Power supply 7. Touch pad
2. System Board 8. Optical Drive
3. 3.5” USB FDD 9. Modem
4. 2.5” HDD 10. LAN
5. Keyboard 11. Sound
6. Display 12. Wireless LAN
The Test Program operations are described in Chapter 3. Detailed replacement procedures
are given in Chapter 4.
The following tools are necessary for implementing the Diagnostics procedures:
1. Diagnostics Disk (Test program for maintenance)
2. Phillips screwdrivers
NOTE: Be sure to use the PH point size “0” screwdriver complying with the ISO/DIS
8764-1:1996.
3. Toshiba MS-DOS system FD
4. Work disk (for USB FDD testing)
5. Cleaning disk kit (for USB FDD head cleaning)
6. Debug port LED
7. Wraparound connector for PC card
8. Tester
9. External CRT
10. External USB FDD
11. External USB test module
12. External USB cable
13. External USB mouse
14. Headphone
15. Microphone
16. Toshiba CD-ROM test disk (ZA1217P01/P000204190)
17. Toshiba-EMI DVD-ROM test disk TSD-1
18. Music CD
19. CD-RW media (recommended :RICOH, Mitsubishi Kagaku supporting 4x media)
20. DVD-ROM media (normal media on the market)
21. RJ-11 connector checker LED
22. LAN wraparound connector
23. Speaker with an input terminal for S/PDIF
24. Personal computer that can communicate by wireless LAN for wireless LAN
